58"The increasingly rapid pace of life today causes more problems than it solves."

Nowadays, whether technology produces more problems, which threaten or do harm to the quality of our lives, than it solves stirs up a heated debate. Admittedly, the explosion of technology, aparts from the benefits it bestows to humans, more and more are being used as a harmful tool that damage our lives, or threaten the existence of each other. However, as far as I am concerned, technology itself could not create any benefits or problems, it is the human beings who utilize it or abuse it.

Firstly, few would dispute that technology improves the quality of life to such a degree that could be hardly found any shadow of the past. For example, in the post-Internet-bubble world, people only need a computer and a net wire, then obtain the latest news, education, e-commerce, and chat with their friends, confident or unfamiliar, through MSN or ICQ (both are the prevailing chatting softwares). Also, today's precise instruments facilitate the scientists to map out the human genome draft, which will eventually being usde into research for a better way toward mysterious diseases. Moreover, fundamental physics and chemistry push us to build up an effecive and producitve industry system, which greatly promotes the productivity of all goods, and results in advancement in all humans' lives. Thus, with the technology as a vehicle, our society is heading forward a better quality of lives.

Nevertheless, I concede that technology does "create" many problems to impede the speed of our lives. In the forgoing examples, Internet will makes us enmeshed in a disordered web with a huge number of spams, pornography, and computer viruses; genome research raises a reflection of ethical, legal, and social issues; the development of industry brings about environmental pollutions. As a result, many people, including the speaker, inclined to underrate the technology for its negtive effects.

From the forgoing analysis of possitive and negtive effects of technology, one could hardly determine either one is more vital to the quality of life. Here lies my points with this issue-the motivation of using technology. No amount of technology can completely facilitate our lives for the reason that human nature is in ascendancy. One technology that scientists or engineers explore or invent is initially objective-- with no thought or mind. Since technology is often a disinterested exploration, people who use it, such as the netizens, scientists, and engineer, are no different from anyone else: they are passionate human beings with the nature of aggression and greed. Imagine, one scientist who is craving for the genome investigation is a Nazi who contemplates to make use of the technology to create another Hitler. How could we blame the technology, while, leave the guilty person out of condemnations and punishments? The technology, be it useful and profitable, is a non-mind tool driving by human beings.

Finally, to get a better use of technology, there are many ways to impair those negative effects. One the one hand, it is the duty of our government to legislate relevant laws which could prevent or constrain people from misuse or even taking it for evil purpose. On the other hand, social critics should put forward those ethical or legal matters to arouse public attention through the mass media. One we stand on the ground of the long-lasting deveopment of human beings, there should be ways to prevent misuse of technology.

To sum up, to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of technology, one should not cast attention on the technology itself. After all, it is human beings who make good use of it or abuse it. To exert more benefits of technology, law should be made to by our government and critique should be delivered to warn us those increasingly pressing problems.
