Are nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal essential in society? The speaker claims so, for the reason that these areas can satisfy human needs that are not solved[解决的对象不是needs] by mainstream science. I concede that nonmainstream areas can help people in some cases. However, in my view, relying on nonmainstream areas might turn out to be more harmful than beneficial.[开头不错,句式比较好]
Admittedly, nonmainstream areas can satisfy certain human need[加上s], which mainstream science cannot. For instance, everyday we humans face many choices and have to make various decisions. When it comes to the decisions that are related to one's future, job, and wealth, it is usually hard to decide. Since no kind of mainstream science can tell the consequences that each decision may lead to, one may tend to get help from fortune-tellers. In fact, we will never know the decisions we did not choose is better or worse, however, to a certain extent, fortune-telling do free people from struggling to make decisions.[这段语法我没有看,不过我觉得观点还是比较好的,能说出非主流的好处,但是一半老美喜欢admittedly放在最后一段]
Nonetheless, nonmainstream areas are not rooted in reason, rendering them actually unreliable. A fortune-teller is not responsible for one's fortune. One will benefit more by collecting information and advice[应该用被动] from his or her relatives and friends rather than asking a fortune-teller for help. If a person deeply believes in psychic and paranormal pursuits for a long time, he or she is likely to have many strange ideas, which will result in a poor communication with others. Moreover, facing different opinions, he or she may even hurt others. [句子和短语运用得很好,只是最后结尾好像有点问题,因为无论是不是非主流,持相反意见总是或多或小伤害了别人]
On a social level, nonmainstream areas are harmful to mainstream science, as well as society. The popularity of nonmainstream areas will surely impede the development of mainstream science. People will never search for the unknown by a scientific means, but to find indications from stars. People will never need a healthy lifestyle and advanced medical care, but an evidence of afterlife. Moreover, in this case, people are easy to be made use of for evil purposes, such as terrorism and wars.[这一段很好,我觉得,句式用得好,有点抒情,而且连接过渡很好]
In sum, I concede that nonmainstream areas can help people feel better when they are in problems that mainstream science cannot address. However, since nonmainstream areas do not stem from logic and reason, people risk in making wrong decisions and do harm to others, as well as society.
