Issue 154
"Both parents and communities must be involved in the local schools. Education is too important to leave solely to a group of professional educators."

Is it necessary that both parents and communities be participants of local education, as the speaker asserts? I agree insofar as parents are far more familiar with their children and eager to take whatever measures are needed to secure them receive the best possible education than anyone else. Beyond this concession, I tend to disagree with the speaker's claim, based on the reasons discussed below.

It is true that parents may truly know the unique needs of their children. After all, they are the ones who are most acquainted with the children, in term of habits, interests, personalities, etc. All of these make possible that parents hold the advantages in the introduction of their children. A telling example that aptly illustrates this point is Albert Einstein and his mother. When a child, Einstein was quiet and spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. It is with his mother’s encouragement and channel off help him find out his interest of mathematics, which paved the way of his success later in life. Although, I concede this point, the plain fact is that such paragon is far fewer in number today.

The first convincing argument against the statement is that, in common pattern, parents usually lack the specialized training to appreciate what pedagogical methods are most effective, what constitutes a balanced education. To the contrary, professional educators, by virtue of their specialized knowledge and experiences, are far better equipped to ensure a properly placed education for children. Consequently, they could render the students appropriate curricula, pace and agenda for learning, based on diverse levels and phases.

An additional compelling argument against the speaker’s contention is that actually, parents are too subjective to always know what is truly best for their children. Basic to the choices on behalf of their children is their personal inclinations. For example, in my observation and experience, many parents tend to impose their own cherishment which could not be attained during their childhood, or things they think are best for their children based on their past experience, on their children, neglecting the children's genuine interests, for the reason that those "cherishment" or “things” will “serve the children well in the future”. All too often we see that the “good-will” does not necessarily followed by a pleasant result. Ample examples have mirrored the emotional and psychological detriments children could have. In contrast, qualified educators are more likely to offer objective suggestions by virtue of their specific skills and uninterested positions.

I disagree with the claim also in that the communities, which always represented by local government bureaus, must participate in education. Admittedly, education is such an essential objective for a community to sustain and develop that the local government has a duty to ensure it met. Yet, the speaker overstates the significance of the role communities played in education, since it is entirely possible that the municipal bureau would like to make decisions and choices over the importance and setting of various curricula in favor of their interests, therefore have chilling effects on the wholesome of local education, and in turn, the students’ personal developments. A striking example involves the Nazis government’s attempts during the World War Ⅱ to control the education system to instill the horrible genocidal theory about Jew. History has shown the devastating results on that time’s Germen education.

In conclusion, I concede that parents should take responsibilities to participant in the children's education, especially when it comes to the decision on which school or major to take, and so forth. Albeit, it is best let the education of children to the professionals, after all they have adept knowledge and skills best equipped them to executive the education. Moreover, they are more impartial compare to both parents and communities.
