185."Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
Outline: Agree
In retrospect scandals have been long rife in politics, business or academia. In terms of its affects, I concede that every so often scandals distract people from the essence of the event itself and attract people to focus on less important and flashy news. Nonetheless, I deem that on many occasions scandals do help people to uncover and solve certain social problems to some extent.
To begin with, scandals in the area of politics can be very useful since scandals usually reveal what is happening at the back of those public events. As a fact, human beings sometimes are crurious about secrets and scandals meet with the needs to certain degree. Therefore, scandals can call people’s more attention to some social issues than speaker or reformer ever can. For instance, in 1987 an arms bribery scandal erupted in India, which caused a spate of accusing letter from the public. Eventually the scandal led to the defeat of the Congress government two years later. This case is not rare. Thus scandals is helpful in uncovering the dark side in politics and result in a more clean and open political environment.
Furthermore, scandals in acadimia, like plagiarism or falsified data in papers, are also useful in inhibiting the same science fraud again. As a scientist said, the corruption of power or money can ruin a generation, and the corruption of academia can ruin a nation. Science should be far away from cheating and fabrication while in fact scandals in this area are often heard and read from media. Back in 2002 in Bell labs the young productive boy, Jan Hendrik Schon, solved a confusing problem in transistor and was apparently the rising phisical star who published one paper every 8 days. But then his career collapsed when it turned out that most of his published papers contained bogus data. From this issue, people might make more sound judgement on current sciencie researches and recognize that scientists are no less than other mortals. Maybe it is fame and fortune that lead to the continuous science fraud. Thus, scandals tell people more than the fraud for thoughtful people will find out the deficiencies in our existing science systems and contribute to a better science research atmosphere.
However, apart from those useful scandals exposing certain social problems, some scandals about public figures often involve their privacies, which cause a huge pressure on those people and might lead to the decline of their careers. These scandals are often used in particular, such as appealling readers, attacking political opponents or business enemies. And scandals might be exaggerated by media ,which therefore should not be put much emphasis on.
Anyway although scandals are certainly not what we are looking forward to, they actually are reflections of cercain concealed and mucky facts, and they can serve to call our attention to those serious problems, otherwise which might be overlooked.
