In such an epoch of rapid social and technological development, individuals have gradually developed their own personalities. So their attitudes and interests sometimes can be reflected by the way they look, dress, and act. But does it mean that by observing the appearance and behavior of people, we can tell much about a society’s ideas and values? In my view, the answer is negative. It is true that some traits of a society can be revealed due to the appearance and behavior; however, it is undeniable that more characters are concealed under the phenomena.

Admittedly, we can detect some attributes of a society through its people’s behavior. It has been widely realized that people’s behavior is controlled by their minds, and as they live a society, the society’s ideology has great impact on the individuals. So from what the people act, we can realize some traits of the society. For example, many American youngsters dress themselves strangely, listen to the rock music and act at will. They rarely care how others treat them and express strong personality. It is clear that the appearance and behavior of American young people can reflect the free and unconstrained trait of the society in USA. Having been influenced by the society’s ideology, young people who are considered the most active group in a society, can exhibit the traits of the society in many aspects.

However, in many regions, it is so difficult to discover the society’s attributes only by the superficies. Because in such places, the way people look and dress is not a function of their attitudes or values but their climate or work environment. For example, in Frigid Zone such as the Arctic Circle, people have to bundle themselves up to resist the endless chilliness in the whole year.  Similarly, people who settle in Torrid Zone like Africa, only go with few clothes due to the hot, humid climates. Consequently, in such situation, we cannot reach a hasty conclusion that from the people’s dress, we can realize the particularities of each society.

Furthermore, it is possible that the appearance and behavior demonstrate opposite traits of a society. This phenomenon often can be observed in the societies which are not free. Undoubtedly, free societies can be characterized by rituals, behaviors and manners of dress of people. Such diversity indicates a society with a high value on freedom and cultural diversity. However, it might seem that in a oppressed society, people who have to share similar rituals, ways of dressing and even the same public behaviors display a low value on individuality and diversity which may be the opposite traits of their own culture. Therefore, their own characters have no chance to be realized because of the politics factors.

In sum, while the speaker’s state has its merit, it should not be generalized with enough evidence. The way people look, dress and act is often the symbol of necessity, not of the attitudes or values. Even in some societies, people’s habits go far from their true attitudes and values.
