In the above statement, the author claims that imaginative works such as novels, plays and other forms present a more accurate and meaningful picture and have a more lasting significance than do factual accounts. Admittedly, imaginative works have their special values, but it is not reasonable to get the author's conclusion, for the two hold difference which can not be simply compared.
The imaginative works, compared with factual records, own the characteristics--vitality and full of romance, which express the subjective wishes and reflect the specialty of the temporal culture, the content of cognition and people’s understanding of themselves. For example, the ancient myths, those stories and myths mirrored people’s comprehension on themselves and their own wishes. In the Greek Mythology, the gods such as Zeus, owns mighty power and take charge of all the lives, while at the same time, those gods and goddesses have all the demerits of human beings, violence, varieties of desires, jealousness, careless of lives etc. The ancient Greek thought gods were similar with humans, in other words, gods endow humans their lives and characteristics, which represents the ancients’ self-identification. But things are different in Asia. The gods in China are almost perfect in moral and ethic, with no desires and evil, and oppose killings. Also, many people believe in Buddha, and he appeared in China Myths as well as those gods who were derived from Taoism. The tolerance and humanity those gods owns shows people's wishes about merciful and just rulers, and the credos people held to restrict their behaviors reflect their values systems. What's more, it is interesting to find both the two gods, Buddha and other local gods--Buddhism was spread from India to China--are both in the China Myths, a symbol of the syncretism of the two believes and the formation of the unique culture of the nation.
Another trait of the imaginative works is the values of art. Those works are the productions of re-creation of the materials from reality and people's ideas and other spiritual actions, combining with special approaches of expression, thus presenting their own values as arts. When we enjoy a play, we can see the actions and listen to the voices, and the ornament and decoration of the platform are also noticed, all of which represent the features and the special expressive force of play, which can not be fully experienced through factual records. And it is the same when we watch a movie, read novels, as well as listen to fairy tales. The way those authors narrate the stories, the rhetoric skills used in tales, the visual management and the use of light in a movie are all the specialties of those forms of art that can not be substituted, followed by their own artistic values.
However, even those imaginative works own their own meanings and values, they can not be compared with factual accounts in accuracy and the historical significance. Leave the artistic significance aside; factual records are more valued in academic research in history and other usage of science. The literally reports and records according to facts are indispensable for their accuracy, without re-creation through the author’s own understand and emotions, more credible and valuable in scientific use. Many novels and legends were fictive and added by other elements which did nothing with the reality. As a result, such works full of imagination may not do good jobs in the history researches.
So, these imaginative works and factual accounts respectively account for different usage and of different significance in art and in science, both of them are of important meanings for us, because of their own uniqueness.
