Issue178:
It is possible to pass laws that control or place limits on people’s behavior, but legislation cannot reform human nature. Laws cannot change what is in people’s hearts and minds.
At present day, although the development of the technology and economics is so strikingly rapid that the whole world changes everyday, the laws that passed by government still constantly restrict the citizens’ action in the country. However, do laws have the function of reforming human nature and even altering citizens’ hearts and minds? In my point of view, it is true that legislation can limit people’s behavior indeed, but it does not make any influential effect on human nature.
Laws are a kind of regulation system that legislated by government to protect the interests and the fundamental rights of majority citizens in the country. Since the government must use laws to keep the stability and peace of the whole society, laws ought to have the function that 这个that好罗嗦
to prohibit some behavior which infringe on other citizens’ interest or fundamental rights. Thus, the behavior of every citizen in the country should follow the legislation to avoid invasion of another’s legal rights and interests. For example, the drunk drivers, who may cause accidents and endanger other peoples’ lives and properties, are not allowed to drive by laws. So, without laws, people’s behavior would be optional, and make citizens more vulnerable.
What’s more I also agree with
the author’s assertion about that laws cannot reform human nature. Human nature, which is born with human beings, is a series of shared psychological attributes of humankind that are assumed to be shared by all human beings. It can be changed only only太绝对了by morals instead of laws. For instance, some persons spit casually in public, some young people do not offer their seat to the old or disable people. These behaviors that make us angry reflect that these people still exist one of the bad human nature: selfishness. However, we cannot put them into prison just due to these behaviors; yet, we can sharply criticize and condemn them in moral so that they will be shamed by their fallacious actions. Thus the change of these people who have these immoral behaviors will achieve by the criticism of the whole society. Therefore, laws have nothing to do with the human nature, but the moral do.
However, the author falsely equates the human nature to what is in the human beings’ hearts and minds. Admittedly, legislation cannot reform people’s human nature, yet it can alter things inside the people’s heart and minds to a certain extent. By learning laws legislated by government, we can come to understand that which behavior is illegal and harmful. For example, after America had abolished the laws about black slavery, people became to recognize that slavery is extremely brutal, and begun to accept to the manumission of the black. In short, by means of learning laws, people can transform their minds.
All in all, laws have the function of limiting behavior of citizens and changing opinions inside people’s minds, yet, human nature cannot be altered by legislation. |
