161"In this age of intensive media coverage, it is no longer possible for a society to regard any woman or man as a hero. The reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny will eventually be diminished."
Modern media has offered us quantities of information and has covered many areas of daily life .It seems that nobody could keep his/her secret during the media scrutiny, so it is said that the reputation of anyone who is subjected to media scrutiny must be diminished, including that of the heroes. However, in my opinion, although uncover personnel secret, media scrutiny does not always lead to the diminished reputation.
Admittedly, the great power of media is a danger to personnel secret. The media is originally created to spread information that readers interested in. Ordinary people always have a curiosity to know anything new and exciting--like the story of other people, especially that of the current so-called heroes: have they done something foolish or ridiculous in their daily life? Do they have some unknown defeats or illnesses? As a result, to satisfy such a taste among the readers and thus to increase their circulation and profits, televisions and newspapers are digging the privacy of famous people day after day. Such deed is a threat to the celebrities in certain extent. For example, Michael Jordan was a popular basketball star but got swamped into troubles after some media reported about his distortion with his former wife. These reports however did influenced his image among the fans.
Nevertheless, as there is no gold of pure gold, there is no man of ideal character. In fact ,if a person is honored as a hero, it does not mean that fans believe that he/she is a great man/woman without any faults, but means that certain parts of his/her character(the merits, the beautiful appearance, or some special specialty) is attracting and honorable--just like that Jordan is known to everyone for his basketball art and professional ethic not for his marriage problems and Saint Gandhi is remembered forever as a great leader for Indian literature not as a bad husband who kick wife heavily at home. All the readers are rational thinkers, so they have their set standard to evaluate a great man, which would hardly be disturbed by just a few secrets or defeats.
Furthermore, not everyone's reputation will be damaged after the media scrutiny. The influence of media report is combined with both the repute of the object and the degree by which the media dig into. For instance, maybe many people have a scandal. Compared that of an ordinary worker, the scandal of a president such as Bill Clinton is sure to attract far more attention, thus well-known person is more likely to suffer from decline of reputation. Secondly, if a small number of media report just a few sentences about a corruption of an officer, some careless readers would probably miss this news. However, if all the nation-wide televisions and newspapers continue to stress on an earthquake which happens on a faraway village, it is possible that everyone will be acquainted with the disaster. So it is a little bit haste to conclude that all the scrutiny will lead to the same outcome.
In conclusion, by the motivation of the need of readers, modern media tends to expose people's very secrets. But the true hero will still keep as a hero no matter how violent the scrutiny is.
