------题目------
The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'

------正文------
The speaker claimed that they should give a raise and promotion to Professor Thomas based on the fear that she would leave Elm City University for another college. To support that, the speaker pointed out that Professor Thomas' classes are among the largest at the university which indicated her popularity among students, and she had brought much money to the university in research. As a result, the speaker considered Professor Thomas deserved these prise and with these prise Professor Thomas would not leave. At the first glance, it seems reasonable, but after serious consideration, we can easily find that there are many flaws in the argument.

First of all, it is weak to prove that Professor Thomas is popular among students just showing the fact that her classes are among the largest at the university. Why her clases are the largest ones? Is it just because she is so popular among students? May be not. As we know some lessons are open to students from different major. In most conditions, students must receive these lessons as a basic background, although in fact, most of them dislike it or dislike the teacher. And also, the speaker had not given any survey to show how many students are truly go to the class and what they do during the class. It is possible that many students skip the classes and many students do not listen to the lessons seriously in the class. If those are facts, the speaker is wrong to assume that  Professor Thomas is popular among students.

Secondly, the speaker fails to indicate that the money Professor Thomas had brought to the university in research is much enough and no other professors brought more than hers. The speaker only tells us that the money Professor Thomas to the university in research had exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Then we will ask: what about the other years? Has she always brought money to the university or just in those two years? And what about others? Based on the lack of statistics, probably, Professor Thomas is among the individuals who usually give little money to support the university in research. And most of the other processors have always brought money to the university during many years. As a result, it is badly assumed that Professor Thomas had brought to the university much money.

Thirdly, even if Professor Thomas is popular among students and Professor Thomas had brought to the university much money, both of which are facts, it still cannot demonstrate that Professor Thomas has the teaching and research abilities. There are no evidence about the scores of the students that are taught by Professor Thomas on her lessons or fruits of Professor Thomas' research. So how can we know that Professor Thomas is really good at teaching. And how can we consider that she has the ability of researching.

Finally, the speaker fears that without these prise Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college, which is badly assumed. The speaker has given no facts to demonstrate that Professor Thomas will leave. Maybe she loves Elm City University, satisfys the condition there, gets along very well with the other colleages and her students, and succeeds much on her place there. Furthermore, if she wants to leave, do these prises will certainly change her mind? Does the raise $10,000 enough to satisfy her? If another college will give her far more than the total salary(adding the raise), the little money may just not work on. Of course, it is possible that another college will promote her to a higher position rather than Department Chairperson. If these are the cases, how can these prises avoid Professor Thomas leave the university. At last, we have no information about the reasons for Professor Thomas' leave. Probably her family moves to another place, and she wants to leave Elm City University just for getting a job at another college near her new home.

Taking into account of all these aspects, we can easily see that the argumet was badly assumed. To support the conclusion that Professor Thomas deserved these prise and with these prise Professor Thomas would not leave, the speaker should provide enough relevant evidence and consider comprehensively.
