Living in this era when market-driven economic has developed and improved day by day, corporate executives might bear heavy pressure because of the daily increasing competition between thousands of corporations and enterprises. Although making money for companies is a task which executives should try their best to fulfill ever since they were hired, it  cannot be taken as the solely responsibility. Being a manager of a company and a citizen of the society, an executive should be aware that there are more responsibilities other than earning profit.

No one can deny that making profit for companies is one of the most important duties of executives. According to what I learnt in the course of Principle of Management, a company, no matter in what form it is set up, is an institution which seeks for money and return. As a member of the management, an executive is highly expected to consider every profitable project, guide subordinates to occupy a certain market share and increase return on investment. In a word, trying as many as possible methods to earn profits within the law is the main part of their share of work. Without executives’ hard work on earning money, a corporation might lose its direction and even get into a failure. Take the bankruptcy of some state-owned enterprises in Mainland China as an example. Prior to economic reform in 1978, some managers only focused on producing the targeted amount of product set by superior officers under central plan economic system. Because the cost of input was paid by government, management did not need to worry about the sales of products, market share and hence profit. Even when there was a loss, government would bear it and create a so-called soft budget in which the excess cost was covered. This is why some state-owned enterprises came to bankruptcy when the government could not suffer more deficits during the reform later.

However, executives have more responsibilities than making money for companies. As is mentioned above, they are members of the management and employed to improve their corporations from all aspects. Besides return, there are still many factors including employee benefits which might determine a company’s success. It is not a good idea to give up employee benefits such as holidays, bonus and medical insurance to ensure the profit. Problems like low productivity might be caused if management only cared about seeking money. Employees may even quit their jobs if they feel no sense of belonging. Once I found a part-time job in a company which mainly deals in information technology industry. The manager in my department always criticized harshly his subordinates because he suffered great pressure from his superiors on sales of products. On arriving at the office, I would not see smiling faces but hear loud shouting. After I finished my internship, one of my former colleagues complained to me that she could not accept such a working environment and decided to find another job.

Furthermore, executives have to help maintain a good company image by providing enough after-sales services, calling back products which are not up to mark and compensating customers’ loss and so on.  Although there are conflicts between maintain an image and earning profits, executives cannot trade the image for short-run return or customers would lose confidence on the products. A suitable example is that thousands of packs of Vita Soya have been called back last year because they were made with out-of-date materials. Such an action might lead to high cost in the short term but show an image of respecting customers.  There is a saying as “a customer is god of businesses”.  That is why the management of Vita made this decision.

Finally, an executive plays a role as a citizen of the society and has to take responsibilities outside the company. Managing the company and leading junior staff, executives have more opportunities to make contributions to the society. Nowadays, more and more enterprises hold programs such as donation and fund raising with charities. There are even budgets especially for philanthropy in some large companies. Even though holding such kind of programs causes another spending and even lower profit, a capable executive can always consider merging characteristic of the programs and business of the company. Then social responsibilities are taken and the company image is improved at the same time. Numerous examples like donation to deprived children from a corporation selling stationery interpret this fact.

Every person, no matter company executives or not, have more than one responsibility. Being members of their companies, executives are beyond reproach to seek money as long as they are not against the law. Being members of the society, executives should exert efforts in taking social responsibilities like helping the old and poor to build a harmonious society. Moreover, whether a company is good or bad does not only depend on how much money it earns but also its reputation and working environment. Hence company executives must pay attention to the company image and relevant details while earning profits.
