Authority, by definition of a power to enforce laws, exact obedience, or the person who is invested with this power,especially a government or body of government officials, is always considered to be the leaders’ patent. In this sense, larger-than-life characters are bound to obtrude into the discuss concerning authority. Nevertheless, for the benefit of the societal prosperity, which could be achieved through the mutual surveillance between ordinary people and authority, the majority of the people are encouraged to question, or even censure leaders

Authority is to ordinary people what head is to foot. This is nowhere more true than on the issue that head controls the movement of foot while foot gives the strongest backing to head. Without foot, head can never be supported so as to be in the highest position of the body to manipulate every movement of the body, including foot. This principle is also true when it comes to the relation between authority and ordinary people. It’s proverbially known that authority bears the very power to inspect almost every action of ordinary people. Conversely, however, leaders are chosen according to public’s welfare and therefore the public is also the guarantee of leaders’ power. When societal people question authority, they stand more chance to discover its mistakes. Exposing to these mistakes, leaders could take action to revise them and thus perfect their administration. Besides this, ordinary people can implement their supervision on leaders by questioning authority. under such a circumstance, the supervising-supervised relation between authority and ordinary people has changed from unilateral to mutual, which cannot be denied is conducive to the orderliness of the society.

Deep down, more exposure to public’s eyes prevents leaders from abusing their power. An example in point is Russia’s policy of endowing ordinary people with the rights to exame leaders’ income. According to a Russia official’s statement: the more people doubt the leaders income, the quicker the corrupted officials could be kicked out. In this sense, ordinary people’s inspection upon leaders woud uncover more putrefactive officials,and by dismissing them from the post, the well-being of the society can be better guaranteed in that these bad leader can never conduct selfish actions at the expense of people’s benefit. In addition, people’s questioning authority could make the society more democratic,because a great deal of falsehoods will be discovered in the process. Take American’s revision of Constitution for example, after tens of thousands of people’s scrutiny, the errors in the former Constitution had been found one by one. Eventually, the final constitution came into being, which better promise people’s well-being and the domocracy of the society. With regard to this, it’s without doubt that questioning authority clears the circle of leaders and accelerates the development and civilization of the society.

Nevertheless, over-questioning will beget the societal chaos, because if most people tend to criticise authority rather than to obey them, there would be a lack of compulsive discipline. As a result, people may be inclined to do things at their own will, whether benefical or not. Consider, if school principals no longer mean “authority”to school faculty and students, the later two will not fear being late,or even being expelled in that principals exact no obedience to them. Having being informed of the terrible outcome of over-questioning, we have to bear in mind that basic trust and obedience to authority guarantee the orderliness of the society, based on which could we carry out development and make progress

In closing, every people has his or her shortcomings, including authority. upon public’s inspection, authority could avoid unnecessary misttakes. In this sense, society could benefit a lot from challenging and questioning authoriy. Too much questioning,however, will bogge the society down into disorderliness in that authority is not strong enough to enforce power as a means to regulate people’s behavior.
