Should the greatness of individuals be decided by their contemporaries, or by those who live after them? I totally agree the author’s assertion that the greatness can only be decided by people who live after them but their contemporaries.

Firstly, the contemporaries may decide individuals' greatnesses all by the benefit they are bringing to them while ignore their bad aspects. If a businessman has a great success, and created a lot of job opportunities etc, which most contemporaries can benefit from it, then he or she is definitely successful. The case is the same when it comes to a politician. If a politician has created a harmonious society, and raises the living standard of his citizens etc, then he or she is a good governor in his contemporaries’ eyes. When they can benefit from an individual, then he or she is a great man or woman, no matter what other he or she did is wrong or may do harm to our society. Take Bill Gates for example, he is acknowledged as father of the software industry by the public. But, the question of his monopoly of the DOS and Windows System still waits our offspring to answer.

Secondly, contemporaries are limited in challenging the authorities. When what an individual have done is so great that nobody can overcome and people are all worship him, it may cause an authority. In his old years, Newton, who has been admitted by his contemporaries as the authority of physics, introduced god into physics. At that period time, nobody was able to, if any, did not dare to or fail to challenge him. This is just like a boy who is in love with a girl. Anything including the girl's flaws can be a reason that he loves her. But this had been barrier of the development of physics, which was realized later by those who lived after him.

Finally, the mistakes be made by an individual has to been discovered or criticized by those who live after them. Chair Mao, once adopted a policy that poeple should raise as many as children to make people's life better. On the contrary, the policy did great harm to the future, and people who is after him were compelled to adopt another policy called "one home, one child" to lower the threat of the population of China. At this period of time, it has been too late to realize it, what we have to do is to lessen the harm it may take. Just like when the boy has realized the girl's flaws, they have been married.

In sum, individuals can only be completely and objectively decided by those who live after them but not their contmporaries. And if we realized it, as one of the contemporaries, we have to learn from our history to do a better judgment on an individual.
