“People are mistaken when they assume that the problems they confront are more complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors. This illusion is eventually dispelled with increased knowledge and experience."

Although I concede that when we receive more knowledge and experience, some problems will seem easier than it used to be, I would like to reserve my position on this statement, and my reasons are as follows.

The first and most important thing is that we can not define the intensity of complexity and challenge in a proper way when solving problems and hence it is impossible for us to compare which problem is more complex and challenging or not. Maybe we can give a general index for the complexity and challenge, for example, in respect of the time consumed, the experts hired, the money spent in solving a problem, but this kind of index can not stand for the real complexity accurately. With the improvement of technology, it is unreasonable to compare the problems we confront in modern times with those faced by our predecessors. A difficult problem in past time may be solved in a few minutes with the help of hi-tech equipments.

That we can not compare the complexity and challenge between problems in different eras is in some way stemmed from that some problems have been left unsolved so far and this kind of problems can not be compared at all. Take social problems for example. This kind of problems appeared with the advent of society and went on with the development of society. No one has ever handled this kind of problems completely, which results that the problems may go on and on. We can not determine whether these problems getting more complex or not, because we are not sure that with the booming knowledge of human beings whether the condition of society is becoming better or worse.

Sometimes a problem seems difficult because this is a new dimension derived from a traditional field and hence no predecessors have given any hint in this area. After we learn more knowledge and undergo more experience, we may reduce this kind of problem into other problems which are much easier and less challenging. When we encounter the problems in the field researched before, perhaps we can make them easier by the way of obtaining more conclusions acquired by the predecessors before, but it is not necessarily easier than the problems encountered by the people in previous era. The research in physics area can serve as an example. In the past, experimental physicists could get their result only by implementing a number of experiments and analyzing the results, but now, it seems that the science of physics has met with a bottleneck, which is blocking the development of physics. So it is obviously that the problems of nowadays are not easier that those in the past.

In conclusion, this statement has no reason the hold its position since there is no foundation of the compare between different problems and no compelling analysis for itself.

In conclusion, this statement has no reason the hold its position since there is no foundation of the compare between different problems and no compelling analysis for itself.

哈,虽说我们讨论的半天没什么结果,但总感觉你的论点像逃避问题;
可能逃避本身就是一种观点吧。。。
