Skepticism is the philosophical tradition which doubts that human beings can arrive at any kind of certain knowledge. In this sense, there exists no absolute “truth” in any field of academy but only through never-ending questioning could we march toward the goal of ultimate “truth”. Under such a circumstance, skepticism serves as a stimulus to foster critical thinking and ideation, both of which are conducive to academic progress.
To begin with, skepticism challenges the established knowledge and assumptions. In this process, more often than not, faults would be uncovered and this in turn forces students to conceive comparatively perfect ideas to solve problems. A striking example involves Aristotle’s suspicion on his teacher Plato’s, whose theory was later proved to be unconvincing and flawed. Brave and skeptical enough, A put forward his own theory through critical ratiocination.,and set the standerd for all subsequent Western philosophy. (his doctrine and methord are all superior to those of Aristotle). From this case, we can see that skepticism on former ideas bear some immediate interest on discovery of mistakes and further development. As one towering british scholar once said(and I paraphrase): there is not whetstone like skepticism,to sharpen a good will and encourage a will to learn. In this sense, skepticism begets new ideas, better acquaintanceship and eventually propel progress of civilization.
(关于这一段 : 最后一句总结过大了, 上面的例子没能support better acquaintanceship and even civilization. Maybe you need further develop the example or seek other examples. )
In terms of skepticism’s relation with students’ capability, this is nowhere more true than on the issue that skepticism contributes to students’ capability of critical thinking, which by all mean is one imperative capacity in the quest of science. There is an illuminating ready-made example in point. In the argument section of AW exam, ETS means to evaluate students’ critical thinking ability in the academic research field. In this part of the test, the more skeptical students are, the more chance they stand to compose a sound analytical reasoning. With regard to this, students are highly recommended to bear a skeptical attitude to what they are taught so as to form a sagacious insight and therefore to view all issues in a reasonable and objective perspective. Deep down, skepticism tansforms students’ attitude in learning from passive to initiative, because if students tend to receive all things from teachers, they could not play a dominating role in the educational activity. Conversly , if stundents aret apt to question what teachers teach, they take on a dominant role in education. In this sense, skepticism does good to the formation of students’s better thinking ability and their role in the education activity.
(not convincing, e.g. “if students tend to receive all things from teachers they could not play a dominating role in the educational activity.” The example above cannot prove this. )
But in recent decades, 'skeptic' has come to mean something different. It has come to mean the adoption of an attitude of scorn and derision towards any kind of anomalous data that contradicts current scientific beliefs, and the adoption of an air of condescension and superiority towards those who venture to investigate or write about anomalous phenomena. Consequently, without curbing excessive skepticism ,the whole academia,or even the whole society could be boggled down into chaos(how become that, no example). Aside from this, excessive skepticism is also a symbol of disrespecting ever establishe accomplishment both in terms of academia and other industries. Having know this, we should encourage students to question but within a proper confines.
In closing, the gate of academia is always open to students with skeptical nature. Skepticisim enables students, to adopt better knowledge, to drive out bad knowledge. Thus to advance the development of the society. Over-skepticism,however, would result in some negative effects, worse, it may destroy societal harmony. Therefore, students should be doubtful of what they are taught but to a proper degree.
