“Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life.”

In the contemporary society, we find our human beings are facing a lot of problems that did not occur in the past. From the phenomenon, many people attribute these problems such as the depletion of atmospheric ozone, the greenhouse effect, the abuse of nuclear power, etc. to advancing technology and think that technology creates more problems than it solves and may even threaten or damage the quality of life, just as the speaker asserts. However, I quite disagree with the speaker. Technology affects and facilitates almost every aspects of our life.

Let us focus on our very basic lives. The explosion of population brings about several severe problems, the most urgent one concerning food supply, especially in developing countries such as China. The area of land for agriculture remains the same and even decreases year by year. How to feed 1.3 billion people with such little land became a key question from decades ago, and worried the Chinese political leader most. Through persistent endeavor as well as years of trial-and-error, by biologic technology scientists have improved the methods of planting rice and developed a new species of rice which could provide tremendously large quantity of rice. We can also look into transportation. Centuries ago, circling the earth seems as a fantastic target that impossible to accomplish. That's why it became a milestone of human history that Magellan successfully sailed from Spain and finally came back. That's also the reason that Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days was such a wonderful science fiction at his time. Nowadays, we need only 10 hours to fly from China to United States. Technology makes the world a village. How can one say that technology does not enhance the quality of our life?

Some people may say that:" You can not always look at the advantages and omit the terrible consequences result from technology." I concede that the explosion of atom bomb and greenhouse effect relate to technology. However, it is not the only guilty one who should be responsible for such events. Einstein, the founder of relative theory, once be accused for his research that finally lead to the invention of atom bomb, had predicted that his theory might bring power as well as tragedy one century ago. The use of atom bomb in World War Two is a disaster in human history, but it is not the bomb's fault, let alone the atom physics'. They are just tools made by smart and sometimes cruel human beings. They cannot choose how and to whom to be used. The only difference between atom bomb and a knife is the complexity and intricacy contained in them.

Even granted that technology should be to blame for its disadvantage, we have to rely on it--the only way to solve the difficulties. Take a look at another example. It is believed that the greenhouse effect is caused by largely use of coal after the Industrial Revolution. But we can not rule out the possibility of aberrant change in environment. Scientist are doing research in finding new fuel, such as hydrogen and nuclear power, to take place of coal in order to reduce the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In sum, as the development of the society, technology is advancing and improving, providing more and more new theory and invention to serve our human beings which enhances the quality of our life. Though it may cause new problems as it solves the old ones, I think technology should not be to blame. It is people’s duty to make good use of the technology and consider more aspect of it. Also, only the technology itself can solve the problems it causes. I believe that if we can treat technology fairly, it will bring us greater advantages.
