TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 472          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-2-23

Although many people believe that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, I doubt whether the argument bears much analysis. It is true that many great people are admired after death, as Van Gough and Copernicus, but it doesn't mean it is necessary that virtuosos can not be recognized during their times. There're numerous reasons why someone is discovered and others are buried, and I shall here explore only a few of the most important ones.

First of all, for some people brought things people pursue perennially, whatever what age they are in, they get the same glorious honor. As the musicians Salieri said in the famous film "Amadeus"-"My music growing fainter, always fainter, till no one plays it at all", the canonical works like those from Mozart will shining in our human beings' history forever, no matter how he was suppressed and how he was poor. That's because of the permanent goal for people to going after beauty, including indescribable art works and good will of leading happy life. Almost everyone devoting to people's happiness will be eulogized from generation to generation.

What is also worth noticing is that there are various criteria of greatness during different times. Especially in politics, take Soviet for an example. In the stage when Stalin was president, the whole country exaggerated his contribution and significance, even high above the country itself. Later in the stage when Khrushehev took his turn, Stalin was totally denied regardless of his superb governing during the World War 2. And now we can value him objectively and fairly. It is obvious that neither zealots in Stalin years nor opponents in Khrushehev years have full quality to evaluate Stalin. Only after these years for people sublimating ideas and being more objective to history, we can see Stalin in the right way and decide his greatness and deficiency.

Except for those cases only people after those great persons can decide their excellence, there still more cases we can not judge a person even he or she was someone thousands of years ago nowadays. In science field, people are growing intelligence based on prior ones, which lead to correction of some "truism" in a specific time once before. Just like Lobacheshy challenging Euclid Geometry and Darwinism being questioned now, we accumulate our knowledge and alter those wrong ideas to get more true about the world, the whole cosmos. So we can not decide greatness about someone and some works, even ourselves have to wait for our posterity making decision about us.

To sum up, human will never stop developing steps and therefore we have hope to survive in the unstable environment. Although we can not make all decisions of forerunners and our coeval, we can appraise and treat them fairly and objectively as possible as we can.

比较的难

文章比较难理解。

Although many people believe that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, I doubt whether the argument bears much analysis.(I suspect that the argument is not convincing due to lack of detail analysis) It is true that many great people are admired after death, as Van Gough and Copernicus, but it doesn't mean it is necessary (重复,It doesn’t necessary mean) that virtuosos can not be recognized during their times. There're numerous reasons why someone is discovered and others are buried(用词不够确切,someone 代人还是代人做的伟大的事,如果是后者的话,这里也不能用discovered和buried来形容,可以改为流传深远,如widely accepted and respected, cherished, indispensable 和默默无闻,不为人所知,如silent, extinct). and I shall here explore only a few of the most important ones.

First of all, for some people brought things people pursue perennially, whatever what age they are in, they get the same glorious honor(看不懂). As the musicians Salieri said in the famous film "Amadeus"-"My music growing fainter, always fainter, till no one plays it at all", the canonical works like those from Mozart will shining in our human beings' history forever, no matter how he was suppressed and how he was poor(不大好).
