196 - "Technology creates more problems than it solves, and may threaten or damage the quality of life."

Along with the rapid technological explosion, more and more problems occurred, which draw our attention to the destructive side of technological change. Debates about advantages and disadvantages of technology have last over a century, and in that, some arguers have magnified the terribleness of technology. However, in my view, technology can benefit us rather than damage us if we utilize it properly.

As we see it, technology has posed several problems. While protecting us and offering us more comfortable lives, technology can drive us in danger at the same time. For instance, fire, providing us light and heat for a long time, meanwhile involves us in hurt and destruction of fire if be used insecurely; mechanization, which provides us much higher efficiency for production, later causes a problem of unemployment after extended; electricity, the indispensable energy for modern life, also involves us into jam when power is cut off; computer, the most efficient and convenient machine in current days, meanwhile threaten us with destructive computer virus and invasion of privacy; industrial products, making our life more and more luxuriant, also force us facing increasingly severe environment problems. In a word, damages or problems accompany the technological progress. Moreover, technology developed for war menace us especial cruelly, like nuclear weapon, chemical weapon, and biological weapon. Considering about one hundred thousand people in Japan killed by two atomic bombs at the near end of World War II, considering national fear in United States caused by the mailing of anthrax bacteria in 2001, we don’t dare to image aftereffects if these weapons were used on a large scale.

Although technology has brought us so many problems, we shouldn’t attribute all the reasons to technological progress, because the essential cause of these problems is not technology, but our own selves. Driven by economic profits, factories free wastewater and exhaust gas without decontamination, thus, rivers and air are polluted. Driven by ultra national enmities and political interests, terrorists threaten and harm enemies they alleged by almost all means, including chemical and biological weapons, thus, the world is always up against threat and from time to time guiltless people were hurt deeply. Simply put, technology commits no crimes, but the problem is that human apply technology incorrectly for his own shortsighted benefits. Sometimes, problems occurred on account of insufficient consideration. As the example of DDT, because of our thoughtlessness and hasty heavy use of DDT since we recognized DDT as a potent nerve poison on insect pests, we posed an irreversible pollution in our food chain. Indeed, some problems are inevitably consequent on the development of technology, such as unemployment caused by mechanization and automation. But technology is not the excuse, after all, we obtained great benefits from high efficiency in this progress, on contrary, we have duty to adjust our polity and economic measure to suit this progress.

In addition, we need technology to solve current problems, to discover potential problems and to build our lives more wonderful. To solve environment problems, we need technology to decontaminate waste or polluted water and air, to find out more efficient ways for solid waste disposal, to save species diversity and combat desertification, global warming, etc. To solve social problems such as unemployment, we can create new jobs for joblessness by the help of technological development. Though technology cannot radically release the threat from horrible weapons, we still can utilize technology to protect us well and minimize the harm form those weapons. Further more, has detected several harms unknown in earlier times, such as DDT and antibiotic, progressive technology can also realize more unperceived problems at present and in future. Has provided us huge quantities of physical and moral materials, convenience, efficiency and happiness, technology can still make our lives better and better if we apply it correctly.

Overall, though technology has created many problems, the key reason is not technology, but our false use of technology. To resolve these problems, besides launching on the fundamental cause of our selves, we need the help of technology. If we can use technology accurately after careful research and deliberation, technology will give us far more advantages than disadvantages.
