Issue 46  While some leaders in government, sports, industry, and other areas attribute their success to a well-developed sense of competition, a society can better prepare its young people for leadership by instilling in them a sense of cooperation.

sallabus：
什么是一个好的leader? 一个好的leader应该是依靠自己的能力或者魅力，能够带领一个团队很好的完成一个既定目标。要想成为一个好的leader，one should not only possess the characteristic of competition, but also a sense of cooperation.

1.        只有时刻保持竞争意识，才能够不被快速社会所淘汰，成为一个优秀的人；进而才能成为一个leader。

2． 但要成为一个好的leader，一个人必须有很强的团队意识。 在政治上，现在有很多国际、国内形式要处理，必须组成一个团队，才能对各种情况作出最好的处理。

3． 在工业上，现在专业化非常严重，必须有很强的团队意识，敢于和其他厂商甚至竞争对手合作，才能获得更大的成功。

4． 在很多体育项目里，只有通过团队合作，才能取得最后的胜利。

所以，在成长为leader的路上，一个人需要有很强的竞争意识；但是要想成为一个好的leader，应该更加看重好的合作意识。

正文：

What’s the definition of a good leader? There will be one thousand answers if asked to one thousand people. In my opinion, a good leader is an individual who can lead a group to achieve the goal efficiently, using one’s own great ability and charisma. To cultivate these two characters, one should not only develop a good sense of competition, but also a willingness to cooperate.

One has to keep a sense of competition to be a leader. In such a rapid pace society, one even cannot survive without the goad of competition, not to say to be a leader. For example, in a company, every faculty should firstly realize the competition from other companies and establish a sense of pressure, produce better and cheap products, only in this way could a company make more profits, and thus could the employee lives a more comfortable life. Secondly, one has to confront the competition from other employees, lots of members of a group want to be a leader, only the strongest succeeds. A sense of competition is the essential here.

However, to be a good leader, one should be ready to cooperate with others as well. In politics, for example, there must be an excellent team behind a successful president. Uncountable affairs occur in different countries, in different fields. It is impossible for a president to keep an eye on every corner of the world and make decisions all by himself /herself. A pretty important job of the president is to set up a principle of dealing with affairs and a mechanism of cooperation within the team, most of the time the concrete work is done by the team members, the president only make significant decisions.

Cooperation is even more important when it comes to the field of sports. For example, there are so many excellent players in the NBA. Some of them are qualified to be a leader for their marveling skills, which means they can defeat most of other players in the league in a one versus one play. However, only the strongest team wins the final championship. To be a good leader, only must learn how to cooperate with teammates, learn to create easier chance for teammates to score when being double teamed oneself. If one doesn’t know how to share the ball with teammates, he must be of a capability of winning a one-versus-five game, I haven’t seen such a guy yet.

In short, without the sense of cooperation, one could hardly survive in contemporary society, not to say grow into a leader; without the sense of cooperation, it is impossible for a leader to step a further step into a good leader.
