Marked by great applications of products of high-tech and the ever-growing innovations, our society has been shaped dramatically both in the way people live their lives and in their believes. (这个句子稍微有些别扭,也许可以改成our society has shaped dramatically the way in which people live and believe.) The area of media, once predominated by tremendous amounts of books, is now in the middle of the time in which the television prevails. Tendency is that people are likely to substitute televisions for books as the main tools to learn knowledge and practice skills. In my point of view, this trend, having directed in the wrong way to maintain the development, will eventually end in vain and therefore exert detrimental consequences on our society. (exert to? or on?)
Admittedly, the tendency in point is inevitable in the regard of (with regard to, in regard to你这样说如果确定就好:) ) the advantages that the television has brought us since its introduction into(是不是少个动词?) our lives. Small is the box, but tremendous is the entertainment and surprising it will evolve. Who can deny the vivid descriptions with color, light and sound about famous historical scenery desired for a long time? Who would ever refuse to take a look at a face-to-face interview about a celebrity when this close image could not be available in any other medium(这样说会不会太绝对? When people find that their dreams to love and to be loved eternally are realized on the scream (screen) in a soap opera, how could they ever move their eyes from the scream (screen呵呵). By satisfying people the desire for close-to-life images and exposing them the realization of imaginative dreams, television has gain its paramount role in the area of media.
However, the wisdom and discernment are needed when we look into this phenomenon. The prevalence of television dose not necessarily mean that its importance has been tested by the time. Cast aside its superior merits in applying colorful images and various attractive programmes, television cannot be tools to help us see the truth, develop ourselves, and practice (practise) our thinking critically (critical thinking) , which, however, can be fulfilled by reading the books.
Firstly (First of all, 或者好像first就可以了吧??) , to see the truth, one needs the data and document relatived(你想说什么?相关的记录?related 或者relevant document?), especially in history. Not to mention that television is only the product of modernization which occurred in a short time span in history and therefore preclude the possibility to be the source of events and trends in history, there is little statistical data or document the television may bear. Being a vehicle for transforming the signal to image, television is mere (merely?) a machine of no memory. In this sense, data and document can be only carried in books. Written down precisely and literally, they are the very source that historians can interpret to the history we have now known. (we’ve known so far?)
Furthermore, compared with books, television is neither the expected tools to do some learning nor the medium to deliver the knowledge and skills. The materials gained from television are more likely to bear doubts about the credibility of them. Simultaneously are the events transferred on the scream(呵呵,怎么又错了screen) from their occurrence without enough tests by the time and the critics in point, any learning and conclusion on the basis of them is therefore in lack of validity and convincing.
In the final analysis, television can never be source of the wisdom and critical thinking. Who can ever deny the familiar situation that people sit in front of the scream (screen) neither having any change in the face nor talking with each other to share their opinion (opinions) (这句话我看糊涂了,没有表达清楚): their mind are easily brainwashed and their energy to practice (practise) thinking are easily drained. How can anyone in this stage gain the power and sparkle to inspire and create. However, for the books, as Francis Bacon had said to us, "reading make it possible to think, to reflect, to probe, to understand, to differ to agree to accept and to tolerate". Reading the literal writing of the author of a book (我觉得of有点多,可以考虑不写这么多修饰), we try to interpret the concepts and ideas the author imbedded in the book through the means of practicing (practising)our imagination and adding our own experience. In this process, the sparkle (是不是该用spark啊?) of thought is to be kindled, the width and depth of it to be extended.
In sum, when televisions have invaded every corner of our lives, the vital importance of books as our main and dominate tools to develop ourselves is and should never be changed. Only through reading, not watching television, not indulging in the colorful images television has brought to us, that our capabilities to learn and to think can be realized.
