sallabus:
1. First of all, the arguer hastily assumes that the C Note will have the local market all to itself in that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away.
2.In the second place, the arguer suggests that jazz is extremely popular in Monroe by citing that over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer. But we cannot find any information about where are these 100,000 fans from.
3.Last but not least, given that jazz is really pretty popular in Monroe, there is no evidence in the argument showing that the C Note jazz club will make lots of money from it.
In this argument, the arguer recommends the application for a small business loan should be affirmed since the C Note jazz music club will make money definitely. To substantiate the argument, the arguer points out that there are no competitors nearby and there will be a large market here. In addition, the arguer mentions that there are several well-known jazz musicians. However, after scrutinizing, the argument suffers from a few critical logical flaws.
First of all, the arguer hastily assumes that the C Note will have the local market all to itself in that the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away. But common sense tells us that the distance is only one of various factors that affect people's decision. It is quite possible that the jazz club 65 miles away provides a good service and with a low price. While we have not any information about the services, musicians, prices and other factors which determine the jazz fans' decision since the C Note club has not been set up yet. Thus the preassumpted conclusion that people will all go to the C Note club is unconvincing without a comparison. What's more, the arguer also fails to provide any relative reports of the size of the local market. Without such information, we cannot rule out the possibility that the local market is so small that even if the C Note club would get all the local market, it still cannot make money.
In the second place, the arguer suggests that jazz is extremely popular in Monroe by citing that over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer. But we cannot find any information about where are these 100,000 fans from. It is possible that most of them are from other cities who just visited Monroe last summer to enjoy the festival. Similarly, we cannot get an conclusion that jazz is popular in Monroe just because several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe. Some of them may have chosen Monroe to set up their home just because Monroe has comfortable weather and is suitable for living. There could be lots of other reasons. Without a representative survey of the real reason of why these famous jazz musicians choose Monroe as their home, the arguer's conclusion could not be supported by this material.
Last but not least, given that jazz is really pretty popular in Monroe, there is no evidence in the argument showing that the C Note jazz club will make lots of money from it. Enjoying jazz music is one thing, while spending money on it is another thing. It is possible that the reason why the jazz radio program is pretty popular is just because people love the feeling of enjoying jazz music for free. The national wide study does indicate that a jazz fan will spend about 1000 dollars on jazz per year, but it does not mean that they will spend a large percentage of it on visiting jazz club. Maybe they spend money on buying jazz CDs, watching jazz festival, buying expensive sound box and so on. If most of them visit jazz club for just one or two times per year, it is quite difficult for the C Note jazz club to make a lot of money.
In sum, by the information provided in this argument, the arguer's recommendation is unconvincing. To make it more convincing, the arguer should provide more information about the size of the local market and a representative survey of the determinant factor a jazz fan choose a club. To further substantiate it, the arguer should also provide more information to prove that there do exist lots of jazz fans in Monroe and they are willing to spend lots of money on visiting jazz club. |
