题目:ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

This editorial claims that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. The arguer based his or her argument on a recent survey that suggests the sales trend is about to be reversed. To further advocate the argument, the arguer indicates that the Whirlwind had introduced several games that provide lifelike graphics. The reasoning of this editorial seems sound at first glance; however, a scrutiny of the argument, the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains.
The major problem with this argument is that the Whirlwind's advertising campaign is directed at people 10 to 25 years old and the arguer allege that the age-group is most likely to play video games. However, no information or any other evidence provided that this age-group is "most" likely to play video games. It is impossible to assess the reliability of the assumption or to make informed recommendation. Perhaps this age-group likes to play video games but they have no money to afford the video games.
Another problem that weakens the logic of the argument is that the author provides no assurances that the survey take in account for merely one feature of the video games, the graphics. For all we know as product one elements does not mean everything. Perhaps the Whirlwind's video games have great graphics but not interesting at all. People won't purchase games for boredom.
Before I come to conclusion, it is necessary to point out several other flaws appeared in this argument. The arguer's optimistic predict based on the advertising campaign, however, it is entire possible that the sales are seasonal whether hire a advertising company or not does nothing to do with the sales increase. On the other hand advertising is about to increase the cost. Thus lower the profits.
In sum, the survey cited in the editorial is incomplete and unconvincing, thus does not lend strong support to the conclusion that the arguer maintains. To solidify the argument the arguer should supply more concrete evidence to demonstrate the relationship between new features added video games and the sales' increase in next few months. In addition, the arguer would have to rule out the above-mentioned possibilities that may undermine the arguer's claim.
