1. Individually effective education:
According to UNESCO, 1996, the targets of education for a person are learning to know, learning to do, learning to get together, and learning to be.
If education is especially designed to meet the needs and interests of each student, can they learn comprehensive knowledge, technology, and skills? Can they learn competition and cooperation? Can they learn how to establish perfect personalities or contribute to society?
2. Socially effective education:
The purpose of education for society is to develop academy, technology, economy, political system, and people’s spiritual status.
If education is especially designed to meet the needs and interests of each student, can it contemporarily meet the needs of the whole society? In others words, can society acquire enough people to develop their every aspect, no matter academically, technologically, economically, politically, or spiritually?
If astronomy is ignored, who can send satellites into outer space? If agriculture science is deserted, who can feed human beings on the earth? If environment is discarded, who can protect future generations?
Conclusion: Such education cannot become effective, either individually or socially. (Do not need to answer question 3.)
The statement asserts that education will be truly effective when it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Admittedly, individual acquirements of each student should be respected, and interests encourage students to work hard. However, if education is specially formed to satisfy each student, it cannot actually achieve its expected effect, either individually or socially.
First of all, education specially designed to satisfy each student cannot reach its individually expected effect. According to UNESCO, the targets of education for individuals are learning to know, learning to do, learning to get together, and learning to be. If students are permitted to study only what they are interested in, can they obtain comprehensive knowledge, technology, and skills? If students are always satisfied, can they learn competition and cooperation? If students are educated only according to their own needs and interests, can they develop perfect personalities and know how to contribute to society? Probably the answers are no. As a result, such education cannot become truly effective, for it let students be restricted by themselves rather than provide them with comprehensive development.
Besides, if education is specially designed to satisfy each student, its socially expected effect is unavailable. The social purpose of education is to improve every aspect of society, including academy, technology, economy, politic system, and people's spiritual status. To approach this goal, society needs people to operate each field. If education is designed to meet individual needs, can it contemporarily satisfy the whole society?前面好像见过这句话 Unfortunately, individual needs and social needs are sometimes unavoidably conflicting. Take academic area for example. Usually students would like to choose majors which will bring excellent jobs and high social positions, whereas subjects which demand great assiduity but cannot lead to perfect profits are not welcomed. Nevertheless, society requires all kinds of students, otherwise it cannot develop smoothly and evenly. If astronomy is ignored, who can send satellites into outer space? If agriculture science is deserted, who can feed the vast population on this planet? If environment is discarded, who can protect future generations? Similarly, in other domains, no matter technologically, economically, politically, or spiritually, not a single character can be disregarded. Therefore, to satisfy social needs, education sometimes has to sacrifice individual needs.
In conclusion, education cannot become truly effective either individually or socially when it is specially designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. Such education prevents students to develop comprehensively, and cannot actually satisfy the whole society.
