题目:
In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

It is rather absurd to predict that the television will replace books for us in getting knowledge, although televisions are so popular in families nowadays and are more attracting and interesting.
It has to be admitted that television dominate our spare time, as the word couch potato vividly depicts the phenomenon of the modern people watching TV all day sitting in sofa while eating those junk foods. Television, bringing us daily news as well as wonderful programs and moving , indeed closely grasps the modern guys by its distinguished characteristics, immediate news delivery and the visual effect for which books will never supplant this one of the greatest inventions of the twentieth century. Television could acknowledge us what is happening now, while books can only tell us what had happened: could show us directly and vividly scenery while books by describing in dry words.
However, books are also important and necessary to us although facing great challenge from televisions. Form my point of view, televisions will never replace books. First of all, in comparison with TV, books are not immediate but deep. Books could not tell us what is happening but can show us what was happening better than TV. Most TV programs are from books, especially those history TV plays or TV salons on history events. Shakespeare’s great works always serves as play or movie scripts, as well as the Greek and Roman mythology. So while we are interested in those programs originated from books, we could read those books through which we can get a direct communication with the author and his thoughts. Secondly, in fact books could offer more vivid scenery than books by depicting in words. After reading those skillful depicting from those talented writers, a live scenery will appear in our mind by closing the eyes and loosing our imagination, quite different from those already created by the director of a movie or a TV play.
From another aspect, we can explain why books will not be supplanted by TV. That is the human habits. For thousand of years we convey our own thoughts to others mainly by saying and writing, not by making the thoughts to TV programs. Even nowadays, when DV player become rampant the habit of writing is still unchanged to record what we feel and what we think. The book, created by the record of thoughts and the accumulation of knowledge, is the real cornucopia of knowledge.
Procrustean comparison between television and book should not be emphasized. They are playing different roles in our everyday living. TV serve much more for the entertainment and amusement, and of course the daily news, while books bring us more brilliant thoughts and it is a more effective to acquire those so called "knowledge" , instead of those from TVs filled with advertisement and empty, vulgar talk shows.
Television, sever as a assistant to acquire more knowledge and a entertainment tool, will never be a substitute for books.
As we discussed above, though TV seems more popular, books will not be replaced, and they are as important as before. Television and book are parallel methods for us to get knowledge, and has their own advantages.
