Do rituals and ceremonies have an effect of defining a culture and cognizing people? The speaker claims so. I tend to agree with the speaker. In my view, rituals and ceremonies may be used as tools of forming conceptions about what are type of people they are and the effect of defining a culture may dominate in people’s minds.
The first reason why I generally agree with the statement has to do with the classifications of rituals and ceremonies. Rituals and ceremonies differ in date, reasons and attendances. People who take part in different rituals and ceremonies are supposed to divide into many groups. And each groups or associations have rules and regulations with which people are bonded together and form sense of self-identification. Take marriage ceremonies for example. Lovers are witnessed by their relatives and friends to be husbands and wives. From that day on, they are cultivated to realize that their relations is legal and both of need afford responsibilities as husbands and wives, or as parents. Through marriage ceremonies, couples are concerned with what they really need and what kinds of lives they want to led.
The second reason for my agreement with the statement has to do with the effect of a culture. Rituals and ceremonies are rich in their essence through which many various thoughts converge together. What results for attending such rituals and ceremonies are that attendances well conceal under the conception of the cultures. By doing that, people get to form common sense about these cultures and make sure clearly what their preference are. So through attending rituals and ceremonies, a way of self- identity appear. Take go to church for example. For Christian, god has power of controlling the whole word and has the ability to bless people. To be a Christian, people should restrict themselves from doing bad things. So for Christian, go to church every week can provide the opportunity of strengthening their faith and reminding their duties. It also helps people make conversations with others who hold the same faith with them. For Christian, this ceremony provides them another aspect from which they will be observed and recognized clearly.
In sum, rituals and ceremonies may do a great deal of helping people diminish who they are through the culture hidden under rituals and ceremonies.
