In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.

In such an age with rapid technological change, many manners of our lives are influenced and changed. Someone holds the opinion that reading books is not as vital as it once was, for people can learn as much by watching TV as they can by reading books. According to me, both watching TV and reading books are effective methods to learn, and we should strike a balance between them.

First and foremost, apparently, watching TV as an innovative method to learn plays many important roles in studying for its large amount of information, vivid picture and a well-developed construction of light and sound. Nowadays, a large amount of information can be acquired from TV, like science, philosophy, arts and the like. And more and more TV stations pose attention to transmitting useful information to their watchers. As a result, many educating TV shows come into being, like Discovery, Animal Planet, National Geography. Though watching such TV shows and enjoying their vivid pictures, information is transferred into our brain  subconsciously. Moreover, the colorful light and attractive sound can induce many children to the TV shows, by which these children will be easily to accept such useful information.

However, reading books, a traditional way of gaining knowledge and entertainment, still has and will hold its stable position in human life which could not be replaced by TV or even other things. Compared with TV, due to the easy availability and affordability of books, we can attain them and do not have to consider the too much cost of them. In addition, we can read books in any place with any posture. People need books with an eye to satisfy a need of the characters written by the literator they cherished. The knowledge of books covers every area of society, so one always could find what he or she really needs from books. Books are the main means for students to do their learnings, although more and more technology has been brought in advanced education such as teaching by computers and even education on-line which are just an advanced complementary for traditional way of education based on books reading.
Furthermore, from the angle of learning process, reading can drive us to think and analyse and our ability is also trained in this way.

However, aside from such benefits of TV and books, there are many flaws of them. Watching TV, for instance, is just a passive learning process of adsorbing knowledge. Even worse, many TV shows like violence, porn and so forth, without being filtered, may give a bad impact on our children. When it comes to reading books, there are still many disadvantages. For example, the abstract theory cannot be well understood. Many descriptions of animals, plants and other organisms cannot be imagined out without some pictures to explain them.

To sum up, for both the benefits and flaws of reading books and watching TV, it is imperative for us to combine such two measures with each other and make them easily accepted. Therefore, we should strike a balance between the two methods. And in some cases, we should encourage people to learn from watching TV. In other cases, reading books is a good method to learn. Only in this way can we learn more effectively and better.
