Because we can never know the past directly but must construct it by interpreting evidence, exploring history is more of a creative enterprise than it is an objective pursuit. All historians are storytellers."

The speaker asserts that all historians are storytellers because of their  constructing the past by interpreting evidence creatively. In my point of view,however, I disagree with the speaker for some obvious reasons.
In the first place, to retort speaker's viewpoint, we should elucidate historian’s  definition. They record history event and study history  material. Tracing  intrinsic relationship and rule of history are their duty.Their work is important. However, the job of storyteller  is merely a kind of  public entertainment. For example, Arnold Joseph Toynbee, British historian, known  for his view of the past as a succession of civilizations rather than political  entities. Of the many books written by Toynbee, A Study of History has had considerable influence on modern attitudes toward history, religion, and  international affairs.
In the second place, the range of historian's study widespread. Such as historical
remains、historical books、important events and  a nation's conventional  culture.For instance, Greek historian Herodutus is known as the father of  history. When he traveled throughout Asia Minor,Babylonia,Egypt,and Greece,he  referred to authoritative historical writings recording serious events. Though  these records were sometimes inaccurate, he was generally careful to separate  plausible reports from implausible ones. So his boot entitled History also be  considered a classic by modern historians and critics . Maya Civilization, an ancient Native American culture was long believed that its  culture reached its highest development from about AD 300 to 900, during what is  know as the Classic period. Recent discoveries in northern Guatemala, however, have  challenged that asumption. There, highly developed cities, sophisticated art that  date from as early as 600 years before the Classic period began.
Admittedly, when historians don't have adequate materials to continue their  study, suitalble and reasonable deduction is necessary. Integating all the  available data  into a coherent and understandable picture of the past is an  useful method. But it is different from storyteller's unbridled fabrication. Who discover the Americas is still debated by historians. Christopher Columbus, an  Italian-born Spanish explorer, was believed the first discover when his ships land  in the Bahamas. Although current archaeological evidences are unable overthrow  that hypothesize, people have found some tools used by ancient Chinese.After a series of research, some historians are sure that the  tools were created  before Columbus's action. They have evidences to query old assumption.
In sum, there are many discrimination between historians and  storytellers .Historians' works are more solemn and meaningful to our society. We don't have any cause to name them storytellers.
