41"Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."


This statement suggests that non-mainsream areas of inquiry are vital in satisfying human needs and that these areas are therefore vital to society. I concede that astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits respond to certain basic human needs. However, in my view the potential harm they can inflict on their participants and society far outweighs their psychological benefits.

Admittedly, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry address certain human needs, which mainstream science cannot. One such need involves our common experience as humans that we freely make our own choices and decisions in our life. During the life, we experience a lot of uncertainty, confusion and we will feel upset and mindless when in retrospect our choice turn out be poor or useless ones. Understandably, to escape from the difficulty in spirit and reality, many people try to alleviate the pression and burn of making decisions and choices to kinds of non-existent matter such as astrology and fortune-telling. They rely their fate on the stars and the cards for guidance.

However, negative effects are brought while people act in the nonmainatream areas. As people rely their fates on the astrology and fortune-telling which lack basic supports of science, extreme and harm activities may happen. Take the followers of evil religion for example, this group of people will contribute and sacrifice all they have even what plunder from the others, when necessary, to the evil religion, which they believe will bright them truth and satisfying. In spirit, they absolutely go by the evil orders, pressing them to burn themselves in public, which lead bad effects on both society and people around them.

Another factor limits the effect of the nomainstream areas of inquiry is that its role played on people. Although the astrology and fortune telling existed around us for thousands of years, conspicuous positive effects on people have not been seen. When facing difficult condition, they often prefer to accept the scientific facts that have more power in solving and proving questions. We must recognize that, of course, there are many requests can’t be satisfied for the limitation of contemporary technology, nevertheless, they will not be realized at last, neither. The prediction of doomsday on 1999 turned out erroneous aptly illustrated it.


With the development of technology, advancing scientific knowledge disclosure piles of puzzles. People who believe nonmainstream areas of inquiry will become less and less, meanwhile, mainstream believer will be more. Scientific psychological means are being accepted by more and more people, and their spirits of escaping from the scrape are becoming more rational. Recently, the number of spirit suffer who would like resort to psychological doctors is larger than before, which express that they view mainstream ways are more reliable. The main stream areas of inquiry address more vital role.

From what have been discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that nonmainstream areas of inquiry satisfy people sometimes, but mainstreams ones do play a more role in satisfying people.
