38"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."




Nowadays, with industrial life developed effectively, television becomes a part of human lives. People spend much more time on television than in books. Does watching television can take place of reading books to learn? Some people are agree, since television provide a series of education program, it also bring knowledge to us. But others think books and television have different uses, as we can not learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. As far as I concern, both books and television has it's different function.

Admittedly, reading books provide us such a traditional way of learning, by which we retrospect to long ago when paper exists, or even, in the seminal state-- there's not paper--silver cloth and other substitutes were used to record things. People learn by reading a book. As time goes by, books handed down from one generation to another, knowledge of long ago such as Confucianism, which domains the Chinese people’s minds for a long time. Nowadays, reading books is still the way how people learning, since books are more convenient and portability than television. It is much easier to bring about. We can choose whatever subjects we concerned about, by the way, we learn more independence.

Moreover, watching television also provides us knowledge but just a few. Instead, it wastes time. First, it provides us a various kinds of programs, such as entertainments, news, talking-show, sports, etc. We can not stick on one program, which is different from reading a book, it depends. That is to say, we cannot decide what we are going to learn. Rather, there are advertisings in it. Second, we cannot bring it about, since it is big and heavy, and needs electricity, we could not watch under a tree, reading waiting buses, or in a park—unless we are willing to move such a heave and large thing.   

However, we cannot deny we also learn from the television, since it has some advantage than books: more colorful and audible, provides a vivid and attracting picture, and also provide some education program and science fiction. We spend a myriad of time watching it, because there are many program for entertainment and it is likely that we cannot control ourselves, a log of time were waste. Besides, there are still some disadvantages in books. There are some kinds of books   for entertainment. But we are likely to control it--if we don't bring it aside, which is different from watching television that programs and shows are on time, it is out of control.

In sum, on the one side, reading books provide us a traditional way of learning; on the other side, television is a way of entertainment, we cannot deny we learn thing from life everywhere, by the way, television also provides programs for education such as technology, biology, foreign languages and so on…However, concerned about the efficient, practicality, independent and convenient way. We chose books to learn.
