TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: 610         TIME:          DATE: 2006-7-13

The author asserts that something of lasting value in our society is given by artist rather than critic. In my point of view, I fundamentally agree that it is the artist brings something of persisting quality, but the critic also helps to popularize and comprehend the value.

Firstly, as far as artistic value is concerned, it's the artist offers the persistent development of the value. In the first place, if the artist does not exist, there will not be any sort of work of art, much less critique. The first use of Montage by James Williams, the English director, in the film provided another skillful way to express the movie's ideas.  Picasso, one of the most prolific and influential artists of the 20th century, launched cubism, introduced the technique of collage and eventually produced many immortal masterpieces. From the facts above we can conclude that it's the artist's creativity that determines the origin of the artworks' values. On the second place, the great artwork made by artist usually is unique and its value is inestimable. For example, Mona Lisa, the character in the homonymous painting portrayed by Leonardo Da Vinci who was the famous artist in the Renaissance, only smiled once. Taj Mahall, one of the finest examples of Muslim architecture, is also the only one in this world. Hence, the originality and the uniqueness of the artwork determine its persistent value.

Secondly, the artist leaves us not only the artwork itself but also the historical values which are reflected by the content of artwork, whereas can not be obtained from the critic. On the one hand, we can imagine the social life and conflicts through novels, paintings, films, sculptures, potteries and so on in the contemporaneous times. For example, Shakespeare's operas and poems vividly and detailedly describe the English society in the transitional period when the feudality came down and the capitals were accumulated initially. Also we can draw the profile of the American society of 17th century from Mark Twain's writings. On the other hand, some kinds of architectures designed by the artists reflect the conditions of politics, religion and military in the specific era. For instance, the St. Peter's Basilica with baroque style in Rome embodied the powerful political influence of church in 15th century's Italy, and the Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the world, built in Qin Dynasty implied the military strategy of the emperor in ancient China. These historical values of artworks can only be deduced from the content and representation of themselves produced by artist rather than the artistic comments from critics.

However, the critic does make great contribution both for the public to understand the artworks and for the artist to revise themselves. As a saying goes: "The world is full of beauty unless we have a pair of eyes to find them". With the critic's equitable and objective evaluation of artworks, the populace is easier to grasp the essence of artworks and view the masterpieces more professionally. On the other hand, the fame of a fine artwork can not be spread quickly and widely and accepted by the public as soon as possible without the approval of the critic and the expert. Moreover, the critique by the critic can remind the artist to consider in another point of view and therefore improve their skills and produce more and more fantastic artworks.

In sum, without the artist the artworks and the accompanying values will become eliminating. It is indeed the artist who brings something of persisting value to society. Yet, the critic also contributes to promote and disseminate these values. We should not neglect the positive effect of critic while emphasizing the crucial influence of the artist.

The author asserts that something of lasting value in our society is given by artist rather than critic. In my point of view, I fundamentally agree that it is the artist(that) brings something of persisting quality, but the critic also helps to popularize and comprehend the value.

Firstly, as far as artistic value is concerned, it's the artist (who)offers the persistent development of the value. Taj Mahall, one of the finest examples of Muslim architecture, is also the only one in this world. Hence, the originality and the uniqueness of the artwork determine its persistent value.(例子都很新颖,但我感觉稍微有点乱。)

These historical values of artworks can only be deduced from the content and representation of themselves produced by artist rather than the artistic comments from critics.(这个观点不能赞同,在反映历史方面,critic and artistic 应该都是有的,但是你可以说artistic是primary history material, 而critic 是secondary history material. )

(这里可以举几个例子,比如毕加索的立体画等。)On the other hand, the fame of a fine artwork can not be spread quickly and widely and accepted by the public as soon as possible without the approval of the critic and the expert. Moreover, the critique by the critic can remind the artist to consider in another point of view and therefore improve their skills and produce more and more fantastic artworks.

Yet, the critic also contributes to promote and disseminate these values. We should not neglect the positive effect of critic while emphasizing the crucial influence of the artist.
写的不错,结构把握的很好。我的建议是重新安排一下例子,有些地方例子太多,有堆砌之感,而有些地方却没有,调整一下是否会更好呢?
