When it comes to the question that whether it is the artist or critics who gives the society everlasting value, some people consider that it is just the artist himself who create the eternal master piece, while others maintain that only through the bridge of critics those brilliant works could indeed be beneficial to the society. However, the reason why the art illuminated over all these years is that there is a proper coordination between artists and critics.
With incomparable sensitivity and unique initiation, the artist seize the essence of nature and human life, then he express his feel through any specific type of art, music, paintings, poems and so on. Once people enjoy these works of art, they will find themselves bath in beauty and recognize the truth of life. A recent study at Psychology Department of Manchester University suggest that the works of art such as soft music could be employed in some certain kinds of mental treatments instead of medicines for relaxation which may always have some side-effects. In many ways not only like that, artists bring the society back to the nature, they also give us a chance to escape from the pressure of surviving and to have a free journey in mind.
If we turn our attention to critics, we see that they seem play some not so honorable role in many great artists’ story. Because of their originality some genius artists were seldom accepted by their contemporary society. A very important explanation is that those original works always break the pre-existing criterion which has been set by critcs. And individuality, the real value of art, usually refuse to conform to any single norm because art is distinctive, which could not be made in the factory. It then stands to reason that critic would not give those eccentric works positive words easily. As a result, without the affirm of critics, many of such unfortunate artist spend most of their lives in poverty and even died in hungry or illness.
However, if there is no critics to public and introduce some certain kinds of art to the ordinary people, it is quite difficult for those who do not have much educational background in art to understand it. The stream of consciousness drama is a case in point. Its seemingly unclear plot and meaningless conversation always make people confused, at this time, critics’ introduction would help us a lot to experience the author’s deepest feelings. Furthermore, not like the artist devoting himself in his own spiritual world, a critic keeps his eyes on the overall field of art, he is supposed to smell every new changes and tell the possible future direction of this area.
The value of art, which is to make the society more harmony and peaceful is actually created freely by artists and introduce to the non-expert public by critics.
