I agree with the speaker that it is through the artist's transcending works that give the society something of lasting value rather than the critic. The artist has more deeper and sensitive perspectives than his contemporary individuals, which can lead to the creation of artistic works with lasting value. While critic also plays a significant and indispensable impact on the interpretation and transmission of the artistic works, its work contributes little to the lasting value to the society.
Firstly, the artist is original and creative. With the special and insightful perception on the nature, the visceral comprehensions of humans, the statues of the society and its populace, he views the living creatures and world in a higher altitude, therefore, He can rely on the artistic works to reflect the social problems of his time, the living status of the populace which could be of historic values. To illustrate this point, we need look no further into the literate works of realism in the western society. Through his book “A tale of two cities” Charles Dickens opens a door for us to know the social problems in France and thus helps us to fully understand the later breakout of the French Revolution. Mark Twain, the well-known 19th writers, one of his masterpieces “the adventures of Huckleberry Finn” reflected the social statues in the cities along the Mississippi in late 19th century in the United States before the civil War. More recently, the best seller book "the kite runner " of New York Times portrays the current military and political changes and the religious conflicts of the Afghanistan. All these works serve as an instrument for us to pursuit the states of living creatures beyond our times or in our times and would be helpful for the future generation to understand the history of the past.
Secondly, the artist can create works which lies the perpetual ideals, values of human beings irrespective of economical, technological advancement or the social system. They can be appreciated by people from all races, all social status and all generations. Several masterpieces would be a case in point. "David", the statuary of Michelangelo fully reveals the power and beauty of human body; the fifth symphony of Beethoven, conveys the confidence to fight against the tough fate and serves to courage hundreds of people when they are depressed in the face of difficulties. The Oscar awarded movie “a beautiful mind ” based on the autobiography of the famous mathematician Nash, inspired me not only for his struggle with the mental disease but also for the great loves , support and self-sacrifice from his wife. All these articles provides us aesthetical enjoyment, incite our courage and beautify our sentiments.
However, the artistic works are highly abstracted from the real world or just imagined by the artists, which render the appreciation of the artistic work not directly and easily. Therefore, we should resort to critic to interpret them. Take Pablo Picasso's cubism work Guernica for example, the painting is featured by analytical geometric figures, overlapping planes and surrealistic distortion, an individual without the fundamental aesthetic knowledge and profound imagination capability would be wilder and confused when glancing at the painting, and thus could not appreciate the underlying values of the paintings. At this circumstance, Critics, who have abundant knowledge and appreciation capacity can systematically explore the values of the painting. With their translation, we populace from different culture background and education level can understand and appreciate the masterpiece. On the other hand, without the involvement of critics, the appreciation of some artistic work would be the right of only a few intelligent, aesthetical sensitive individuals. From this sense, the critic plays a tremendous role in the exploration and transmission of the lasting value of the artistic work.
Simply put, the artist creates the masterpieces through his originality and uniqueness, which can convey the ideals, beliefs, and values to the society, respectively of the economical, social system. Though the critic plays a tremendous role in interpreting the artistic work of the artist, he is not creating new values and adds little to the lasting value of the artistic work to the society.
