Generally speaking, tradition is always associated with the past, while modernization is something that belongs to the present. Seemingly, the two of them are incompatible. But actually, tradition and modernization can coexist and collaborate with [有点多余] each other. Both of them contribute a lot to the development of our society. It would be disadvantageous to us if we only choose one of them and do away with [这个词组用得合适吗?] the other.
First of all, tradition is sometimes the teacher of modernization [这个有CHINGLISH之嫌啊。可以说modernization derives from tradition或tradition someitmes breeds modernization] . Some traditional ideas and thoughts are still of important use in modern society. For example, Confucianism, which was founded by Confucius more than two thousand years ago, has a far-reaching influence [这个词组好] on Chinese culture. Even today, Chinese students must learn the essence of Confucianism at school as a method of ethical education. A classical Chinese book called The Art of War, written in ancient times [by strategist Sun Tse], is one of the most influential books about martial strategies. American scholars began to study this book after the Second World War. It is now used by many large corporations and CEOs as the bible of the strategies for business around the world [by many CEOs in multinational corporations around the world as the Bible for business strategics/tactics] . 考证一下] also listed this book as one of the reference books for its students. Therefore, it is not difficult to see that tradition can be the guidance and can provide inspiration for modernization.
Besides, modernization helps to preserve and to better understand [logic! ...to better understand and preserve...] the traditions. In our everyday life, we not only can send e-mails to our friends who are far away from us in traditional festivals, but we also can travel to different places to appreciate the splendid heritage of the past [heritage肯定是过去的] . Thus, traditions are no longer far from us and will not be easily forgotten. In fields of studies, with the help of modern technology, scientists can use robots to explore parts of the pyramid without causing damage to it. Now, we can answer some questions that are used to be unknown to us about the ancient Egyptian traditions. New methods are also used to protect and to restore the exhibits of the past in museums. Without these methods, those objects passed down from old [ancient] times might be eroded and damaged as time goes by [OR: elapses].
Admittedly, tradition and modernization are not utterly beneficial to us. On the one hand, some traditions lag behind the development of modernization. Polygamy is a case in point. It used to be a tradition to have more than one wives [a tradition according to which a male is entitled to marry more than one woman] . But now, in modern society, monogamy has replaced polygamy in most parts of the world, for the latter is generally regarded as a more advanced and civilized marriage system. Traditions like polygamy are those we should get rid of [abandon] . On the other hand, modernization also causes some problems, such as high-tech crimes, serious pollution, and overemphasis on material possessions [OR: acquisitions] . Moreover, we spend less time with our friends and family than people in the past did. We are more willing to surf on the Internet, watching television at home and listening to music with our earphones [(plugged in)] . That is why people sometimes feel more isolated in modern society. So, both tradition and modernization have their disadvantages. But just because of the disadvantages, [neither of them should be entirely abandoned or embraced] a combination and collaboration of the two should be called for.
In conclusion, without tradition, modernization would have no foundation and cultural identity; and without modernization, tradition would be stuck in stagnancy and primitive stage. Tradition and modernization are not incompatible as often being claimed. In fact, not one of the two is subordinate to the other. We should not leave out either tradition or modernization.
2. 'tradition would be stuck...without modernization'
