TOPIC: ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
Though nowadays the science and technology of the society is developing at a dramatic speed, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry which seem to be of less scientific foundation still have their position in everyday life. And just as the speak puts, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
As we know, human beings prefer assurance to upset to some extend. In the prime time, facing so many problems without certainty answerers, our predecessors introduced astrology, fortune-telling and so on as ways to settle down the confusion and to provide some instructions without the help of science and technology. These so called nonmainstream areas of inquiry are passed down together with the improvement of mainstream areas inquiry for the reason that there are still questions cannot be answered and instructions cannot be given by the present mainstreams areas of inquiry. For instance, some kinds of phenomenal are unexplainable for the time being, such as the happening of dream. Even now the scientist cannot completely explain the causing and the mechanism of dream, which is so familiar to every person. The need of assurance drives people appealing to such nonmainstream areas. We are likely to believe that dream gives some instructions for the future, among which some are fortunate ones and some are misfortunate.
What's more, even when it comes to some fields where have already been well studied by scientists, nonmainstream areas of inquiry exist notwithstanding. That is because, the nonmainstream areas are served as ways to comfort people and give the hope to the people in despair. A case illustrate this opinion well is that when a patient is diagnosed by the doctor that he or she cannot be cured in the present conditions, the patient and his or her family may turn to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry hoping that the miracle happens. Event though the patient himself / herself is aware that the chance of cure is slim, to do something is better than to wait for death in despair. Another example suit the case is that it is comprehensible for a girl, losing her mother recently, turns to psychic with the wish to meet her mother again. It is not because that the girl has no knowledge about the scientific definition of death, and it just for the reason that the girl feels the notion that her mother is lived in another world gives her much consolation, which the mainstream areas cannot provide for her.
However, nonmainstream areas of inquiry as lacking of reasons and logics cannot really solve the problems as the science and technology do, so it cannot be the main part of the society. With the development of science and technology, more questions will be answered as well as more phenomenal will be explained, and the people’s reliance on the nonmainstream science will decrease. For instance, the thunder and lighting was once generally considered as the anger of the divine, but now it is not difficult for us to have the answer that it no more than a natural phenomenon of the discharge between two clouds. Overemphasis on the nonmainstream areas of inquiry is liable to cause the misunderstanding of the natural and in turn withdrawing the improvement of the society.
To sum up, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry can not be compared with the mainstream area in significance in the development of the society, and they can only be served as supplements to the mainstream areas to give the consolation to the people. |
