144. "It is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value."

艺术家而不是评论家带给了社会一些具有持久价值的东西。

agree:

I strongly agree with the speaker's assertion that artist plays a vital role in providing our society with lasting values. It is the artist's remarkable masterpieces that give us incredible enjoyment. Yet we should not neglect the importance of critic for their complementary work to enhance the development of art.

To begin with, the innovative and creative spirit marked artists as the most outstanding figures in the development of the history of human beings. From ancient art to modern art, from impressionism to surrealism, they have created enormous forms of art that enriches the culture of human beings and gives us tremendous enjoyment originally belonging only to those living in the heaven. Michelangelo, one of the prominent artists of the renaissance period, accomplished a lot as a painter, sculptor, and architect. His significant dedication to the art exerted profound influence both on his contemporaries and in the subsequent European art. David, a typical reflection of his extraordinary talent in sculpture, expresses both beauty and power. Da Vinci, another great artist in the Renaissance period, was also an extraordinarily innovative and influential artist. The Mona Lisa, his most famous work, is as well known for its mastery of technical innovations as for the mysteriousness of its legendary smiling subject. Yet there are still many other prominent artists to be listed. All of them put together, have created the most precious fortune for human beings.

Secondly, the work done by the critics should also be emphasized because of their special contribution to the prosperity of art. It is true that art is difficult to be judged because of its nature of innovation and imagination. Different people will have different opinions of the same artistic work. But that is not to say art can never be identified with bad or good. Besides, art also should be subjected to some constraints and standards, just as some other work of human beings should be. Besides, for those both in and outside the art circles, they need know the style of an artist's work and his or her most important transition in his or her art career, in order to have a better understanding of his work. After all, it is the critic who will undertake all of the tasks mentioned above. One of the most well-known critics is Berenson Bernard, American art critic, regarded during his lifetime as one the foremost expert on Italian Renaissance art. It is no doubt that the critic's work is of great importance in complementing the artist's production. Yet, their dedication has long been neglected by some people, which is unfair of couse.

Finally, considering the artist's and the critic's respective contribution to enhance the prosperity of art, either of them should received wide acknowledgement. Without artist, we will never have such abundant masterpieces to enlighten the civilization of human beings. As a result, we can not distinguish ourselves from ancient people basically. Without critic, ordinary people will never have a chance to notice those truly great artistic works and art will finally change into luxuries of a small group of people. In this occasion, the art's lasting value will diminished into extremely little. Fortunately, we have done relatively well in recognizing both of their values. Today, it is no big news for some tycoon or organization to offer millions of dollars for an artistic masterpiece. Besides, those famous critics are often employed by prominent artistic collectors and galleries to evaluate the prospective acquisitions.

To sum up, both the artist and critic have dedicate themselves to give the society of lasting values. The difference between them lies only in the different role played by them. And to continue the accumulation of the value, it is incumbent for us to encourage our next generation to dedicate themselves both in creating and evaluating the art, according to their interests and talents.
