TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

提纲:
1.        电视节目大多不适合学习
2.        书本的优势
3.        电视也可以对书本进行补充

Nowadays, television has already become an ordinary part of our daily life as a means of recreations. With regarding to the fact that television is also sometimes severed to enlarge our knowledge at some realms, the speaker maintains that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. Nevertheless, I can hardly agree with this opinion.

First of all, television is designed aiming to entertainment people rather than to educate people, as a result most programs broadcasted in the television are for recreations, though among them there are some with education factors. For example, the teleplays which are adapted from famous literary works are access to the progenitor. However, what the viewers really learned from the television is the story of the progenitor from the plot of the teleplay rather than the significant factors which also help to make the literature works popular, such as the usage of words, vivid description and organization of the story which make the literature works famous, which can only learn by reading the original works in the books. During watching the teleplay people's attention is more easily drawn by the pretty faces of the actors and actress as well as their fashion clothes or the beautiful set-back, which are of little worth for learning.

Secondly, though it is true that there are programs designed for education in television they can only occupy a small part of the whole day programs. Even for the special channel of education, to tract more viewers, the programs of it are designed for all kinds of people from the children to the old, among which those meeting the need of a special group is still few. If people choose to learn from the television they might spend much more time waiting for the education programs they need than they spend in actually enjoying those programs. For example, if you want to learn Mathematics by television and there is Mathematics learning program boarded on the television everyday at seven to eight. In this case, you can only learn one hour of Mathematics and waste all the other time waiting for the program. What's more, if, unfortunately, you have not quiet followed one of the problems during the television lecture, it is impossible to retrospect. And if you happen to be busy at this time someday the lesson you missed can hardly be made up. On the other hand, books are always there with the knowledge you wish to learn waiting for your reading. Even when you have questions about some parts of the books, you can read as many times as you wish until you get understand.

Admittedly, that the multimedia attribute of television can be served as a supplement to the books to bring the learning process more vivid and more interesting. For example, the documentary about the gorillas might be more simply to understand than several pages of description in words on biology textbooks. And if you are learning Japanese language, watching a teleplay in Japanese might contribute you to mast such language in a more native way.

As a conclusion, in the era of television, books still process its advantage in learning compared to television, especially in those realms of science need systematic thinking and television can only served as a supplement to the knowledge in the books.
