题目:ISSUE 8 - "It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public."
字数:462 用时:超 日期:2006-7-22
I strongly agree with the assertion that it is often necessary, even desirable, for politicians to withhold information from the public. No matter which position the politician sticks to, more often than not, withholding information serves the interests of not only the party but the nation as a whole. Nevertheless, politicians who withhold information from the mass[the masses] to attain goals for self--interests illegally should be punished.
It is essential for a would-be politician to withhold information from the public to attain their[his/her] political goal. In the political games, each party struggle[struggles] with[against] the political opponents to gain and maintain the power. In order to achieve their goals, would-be politicials spare no efforts to enhance and consolidate[enhance和consolidate换一下位置更好了,先consolidate再enhance] their conditions[positions] by all means in which they might cheat their oppenents as well as keeping[keep,和as well as前面统一] silence[silent] to the public. It is understandable for them to do so since nobody from their antagonists[nobody from their antagonists改成no antagonists of theirs] will appreciate and respect their benevolence when they show complete honesty., which may be a punching bag[又学了个新词,不过punching bag好象是用来指人的] for the opponents to attack. Consequently, it is unnecessary for a politician to be complete honesty[honest] all the time.
Moreover, to be an effective politician, making every[因为information不可数,所以every后面加上piece of] information public would threaten both the national security and the public interests. Consider a politician publicize a concrete project to fight with certain gang rob[名词是robbery], it is doomed to fail inevitably; or consider, the political leader admits to lose control over an epidemic desease, it will bring public panic ultimately. Although they show the merit of honesty on their position, they are irrespective of[irresponsible about] the total interests on the national ground, which unquestionably violates the good of the country. In a word, we disagree with[disagree with改成disapprove of] the honest behaviors that destroy the public interests.
However, a political leader[这里加who] withhold[withholds] information from the mass[the masses] in order to enhance their own interests without considering the national interests should forfeit their leadership ultimately. History informs us that although these political leaders gained their interests and maintain their leadership at that time, they were doomed to fail to keep leadership in the long-term. Lessons of Watergate serves as a good example. Nixson[Nixon], as a president of the America at that time, withheld the information of his active role in the scandal based on his own interest, which did harm to the national interests.[这里没有说明水门事件到底怎么破坏了国家的利益,显得比较空泛,例子就没有说服力] The harmful effects that the scandal brought about are still far-reaching today. Therefore, it is unwise to deceive the public with illegal and negative means, otherwise, the politicians will forfeit their leadership and be abhored by the history.[我觉得withhold information和dishonest behavior是有区别的,前者只是不公开,后者是欺骗行为,水门事件更接近后者。]
In sum, we advocate the political leaders withhold[好象没有advocate sb do sth的用法,所以改成we advocate for the political leaders who withhold] information from the mass only when their goal[被动,is] based on that behaviors[加which] serve the interests both the nation and the public, otherwise, they deceive the public as well deceiving themselves[deceive the public as well as themselves欺骗自己这个意思文章中没有说,所以比较不知所云。但可以解释,欺骗自己的意思是最后损害了自己的利益]. |
