题目:ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
字数:551              日期:2006-7-24

Outlines:

In the epoch of rapid social development and transformation, people are always talking about the relationship between modernization and tradition. Whether they are compatible? Do we have to choose one between them? Someone believe that  tradition and modernization are mutually exclusive options. However, in my opinion, they are compatible and can coexist and contribute to the development to the other.

Tradition, as we know, is what we gain from our ancestors and handed down from one generation to another, such as conventions, folklore, crafts, institutions, rituals, and so on. Maybe some people think that all of them are out of date and hamper the advancement of society. In fact, some of them are the fruits of wisdom of older generations and very valuable, especially in language and in craft. For example, the antient Greek and Latin place an extremely role in the reserch of history. Another case in point is brede. Along with the implementation of mechanization, more and more machines substitute for handwork. However, as one of Chinese traditonal handcrafts,     brede still gains its own reputation and stakes out a place for itself in the modern society. In short, though archaic, some of traditions are still precious treasures for society.

When it comes to modernization, it is usually be reffered to the high technology, urbanization and industrialization. Nowadays, the degree of mordernization directedly correlates with the development of a country. Without high-tech and industrialization, it is impossible to develop economic; Without urbanization, it is impossible to create opportunities for further development; Without democratization, it is impossible to supply comfortable environment to male progress. All in all, modernization is the symbol for the contemporary age and must be kept on advocating.

At first glace, tradition and modernization seem to be incompatible. However, it is not that case. In many circumstances, it is likely to combine tradition and modernization in our pursuit of development. On the one hand, tradition provide profuse resources to be used for modernization. For instance, we are often amazed by the costumes which is the masterpiece of a designer and wonder where their inspiration comes from. Perhaps the answer is tradition, just like Cheong-sam, mediaeval costume may enlighten designers’ creation. On the other hand, modernization is a benificial supplement to tradition. It is obviously that people would be jeered if he or she attires in clothes of middle ages and walks in the street. In contrast,  people will be considered fashionable if he or she which has been mended by syncretizing with the modern elements. In a word, tradition and modernization are interdependent to a large extent.

Admittedly, tradition and modernization have lots of difference. For example, elders prefer old ways of life and don’t like to use mobile, Internet, while the youth are in pursuing of the fashion. In this case, we can’t simply say “good” or “bad” to the two life styles, let alone only allow one to exist in the world. Sometimes, tradition and the utilitarian needs of modern life collide. At the time, we should consider across-the-board and balance pros and cons before making a final decision.

In conclusion, we can reject neither modernization nor tradition. They can be harmony with each other and we can reach a perfect balance between them. Only in this way can our life become more and more meaningful.

写得颇为郁闷,有的没话可说;有的说时,又不知如何去表达:(
