Issue 48
"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Abraham Lincoln
2, 然而,还是那些领导者们被人们记住了,因为是他们的鼓动带来了历史事件的发展。所以在任何历史事件中,两者起到同样重要的作用 Roosevelt (the new Deal, in the Great Depression) and the theory of Deng Xiaoping of china, do an effort in the changing of planning economics to market economic and lead to the booming and prosperity of the Chinese economics.
The speaker asserts that the study of history should place more emphasis on groups of even nameless people than the famous few insofar as the most significant events and trends in history made possible by the former. However, I tend to disagree with such a clam. On the one hand, the speaker neglects the significant contribution of some key individuals, who in my view should be fairly emphasized for their pivotal roles as necessary impetus; on the other hand, the history study need not place any emphasis on the faceless masses for the simple reason that it will waste more money, time or energy to research the evidences that we can gain form the study of the famous few.
Admittedly, we cannot deny the significance of groups of nameless people in the evolution of the human civilization. Without their participating and advocating, any revolution cannot come to action, letting alone success. There are mountains of examples in the human history to support my view, one need look no further than the history wars, as has become the theory that the powerful side of any war must have a strong team as well as an outstanding leader. For a concrete illustration, Abraham Lincoln, an influential former U.S. president, lead the north side to the success of the American Civil War. Nevertheless, without the supporting and participating of the north black slaves, would he win the Civil War just by himself? Accordingly, facing with the particular situation, although the farseeing elites would conceive practical proposals in detail as well as putting forward a target, it is actually the masses that propel the advancement as the basic power.
However, the key individuals serve as the necessary impetus all though the history events and trends. The elites of history, although in a limited number, have a complete understanding of the contemporary social situation and possess the ability to lead a large-scale action. For one supporting example, Roosevelt, the former U.S. president, experienced the Great Depression as his contemporaries, yet it is Roosevelt who brought up the New Deal and developed a bright road for his citizens to the prosperity of economics and the stabilization of politics. There is another striking instance from china, the great government official Deng Xiaoping, daringly change the Chinese economical mode from planned economics to market economics when facing with the economical downtown in that period. China’s economical booming shows exactly his outstanding farseeing wisdom. From the illustrations discussed above, we can clearly see that how significant some celebrities are in face of the particular situation and presenting their remarkable capacities to exploit a bright way for all of us.
For the study of history, as I see it, we need not spend a large amount of money, time, and energy to research group of people’s thoughts or behaviors in the contemporary situation. For one thing, the celebrities’ thought and wish indicate that of their contemporary era, in other words, from the studying of the famous few rather than look for all the identities that have fade away we can understand the basic information of the common people insofar as the celebrities share some feature with their contemporary common people. For one supporting example, when in retrospect of the Italy renaissance, we just pay attention of no more than Michelangelo, Aristotle, and Fro Angelico and so forth. For the other, studying the elites will provide more worthy-to-study excellent qualities to the researchers such as their strong personality, firm willness, and well as their optimistical and confident spirit, all of which can hardly learn from the common ones. Accordingly, in my view, it is a wise and effective act for the researchers of the history to emphasize on the excellent individuals.
In sum, from the evidences above I can safely present my view that either the groups of nameless people or the famous few make great contributions to the development of the history events and trends; for the efficiency and effectiveness of the history study, however, people should make more efforts on the research of the latter to find something representative and admirable. |
