The author claims that in the age of television, reading books can be replaced by watching television in the procedure of learning .However, in my opinion, although television has several advantages, it can not easily take the place of books, not only because of some superiority of reading books in acquiring knowledge, but also the deficiencies of television itself.

In the first place, it is obvious that the television could offer vivid and direct knowledge and make the learning process more interesting. By providing people the opportunity to enjoy a lot of different programs, the television establishes a platform for the people to gain knowledge. Thanks to the news programs, we are possible to receive the instant information about what is happening in the world .Thanks to the traveling programs, we can easily learn the different customs and cultures outside our country. Thanks to the scientific programs, such as Discovery, we are capable of knowing much more about human beings as well as the mysterious world. What is more, the wonderful programs provided by the television will make it possible that people feel happy and free in learning knowledge. 这段的主要问题是列举的若干条内容没有明确表现出电视的优势（TS），也就是视觉。

However, the television also has some indispensable disadvantages that will have a negative impact on the people who watch the programs. For one thing, so many programs that are not useful in the learning process also exist on the television, for example, the soap operas and talk show programs, not alone a myriad of the business advertisement. In fact, the people not only waste a lot of time in watching such programs but also in switching the channels. For another thing, some television programs are also full of violence and crime which would leave a bad impact on the audience, especially children and teenagers. In sum, some shortcomings of television determine that sometimes television is not helpful and even adverse to the learning procedure.

On the other hand, reading books have the superiority over watching the television in several aspects. First, reading books is an active learning process, comparing to the passive nature of watching television, and we can choose freely what and when we want to read.Second, the books are obviously more portable than the TV set so that we can enjoy reading books in many places, such as in parks or even on the plane.Finally, in general, the television serves more as a means of entertainment than education while reading books remains the most efficient way for people to acquire information and knowledge.

All in all, the author over evaluates the function of reading books in learning knowledge. Although watching television is superior to reading books under certain conditions, the former can not substitute for the latter since reading books is still the most significant in acquiring knowledge.
