185 “Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. ”

The title argument asserts that the scandals can be useful in various areas by focusing our attention on problems in ways that speaker or reformer cannot. As far as I am concerned, the scandals will benefit a lot to our society if handled properly, yet the speaker or reformer also can serve to give some valuable instruments to us.

First, scandals often serve as warning signal for people, calling attention to the important but latent problems which could be otherwise neglected.  A good example is the Watergate scandals. The public officials have increased the levels of scrutiny and accountability by reflecting on the scandal. More recently, in the South Korea stem-cell scandal, professor Woo Suk Hwang, once an authority in academic community and a scientific hero of his country, was recently reported by his fellows to fake datas in his research. The discussion about the ethic standards and the mechanism of current research institution has been triggered by this scandal in the whole society. In the scientific domain, people had never been so concerned with these essential problems underlying the scientific research like today. It is obviously that no speaker or reformer can call people's attention to the misconduct of president or a respectable scientist.

Second, the scandals can sometimes distract us from the more urgent and meaningful problems. The media often report the private life of the public figures as scandals to attract consumer's eyes. For example, the sex-related scandals of Michel Jackson did not bring any practical or meaningful instructions to society, even if the attention to the sex misconduct of celebrity is caused, it is neglectable and unreasonable in the light of the cost of reporting this scandals. However many community and social pressing problems which is more important than the scandals of celebrity need our attention to address, such as the poverty and the environmental protection.

Third, the speaker or reformer also can call our attention to the problems. The first US president, Washington was unsatisfied with the colonial rules of British and appeal to the democratic belief of citizens. His contribution to this country places him in an inimitable position. Another great reformer, Martin Luther King was instrumental in help people realize the unspeakable flaws in the values and ideas of the society.

On balance, admittedly, sometimes scandals might focus our attention on some trivial issues, the scandals in most cases can help us to realize the problems which otherwise might be ignored by reformers. However, the speaker or reformer also can address problems effectively in many areas.

Third, the speaker or reformer also can call our attention to the problems. The first US president, Washington was unsatisfied这两个例子写得太轻描淡写了。搞得好像华盛顿是山贼起义一样 with the colonial rules of British and appeal to the democratic belief of citizens. His contribution to this country places him in an inimitable position. Another great reformer, Martin Luther King was instrumental in help people realize the unspeakable flaws in the values and ideas of the society.最好是有有例子又有分析,就比较完整了,就像前两段一样。

On balance, admittedly, sometimes scandals might focus our attention on some trivial issues, the scandals in most cases can help us to realize the problems which otherwise might be ignored by reformers. However, the speaker or reformer also can address problems effectively in many areas.

(这段和第一段有重复的意思,而且例子似乎也不太恰当)

On balance, admittedly, sometimes scandals might focus our attention on some trivial issues, the scandals in most cases can help us to realize the problems which otherwise might be ignored by reformers. However, the speaker or reformer also can address problems effectively in many areas.

呵呵,第一第二段的论证值得学习:)
