TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty (教职人员) should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
(七月十五写的,自己已经修改了一下,不过还是不太行,请拍!)

In this issue the author asserts that working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses the faculty teach contributes to improve the quality of instruction at college and university level. I agree with this opinion of view for the reasons as follow.

Knowledge studied at the college and university level is ultimately for the well-being of the whole society, so it is necessary for the faculty acquaint themselves with the actual life of the society, which might be impossible if the faculty spend all their time in the academic world. Only when the faculty work outside the academic world in the society can they find out what are in most need in society. The most famous improvements of technology come out of the practical requirement of the workers instead of the imagining of the experts in the laboratory. If the faculty themselves cannot keep a close touch with (keeping abreast of) the world outside the academic, it is hard to imagine the students they teach can adapt the real life of society and successfully become one part of it as its workers.

What's more, sometimes without the examination from the world outside the academy, it might be impossible for the faculty to test whether their discoveries or theory are correct and useful. For instance, the environmental cars, which use energy other than gasoline, is invented in the laboratory in the academic world Though it might be work well in the library, no one can ensure its ability unless put it into the real condition of work and let it be used in the practical conditions. And it is hard for the faculty who are with little or no such working  experience can take all the conditions the environmental cars might meet used in factories or other working cases in to account. In a word, the working experience outside the academic world is needed to make ones research of more practical meanings.

To work outside the academic world, admittedly might reduce the time the faculty could use in research and teaching, and the length of working period and frequency of working times should be designed not to undermine the most crucial task of the faculty that is teaching and researching.

To sum up, working outside the academic world is necessary for the faculty not only be decided by the aim of researches in the academies, but also for the requirement of the test the practical ability of the research result.
