75. Some universities require students to take classes in many subjects. Other universities require students to specialize in one subject. Which is better? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Whether the university should require the students engage in a large amount of subjects or only specialize in one of them is always a controversial issue around the globe. As far as I am concerned, not only in the preparation for academic development, but also in the construction of civilized people may a multi-subject strategy be more appreciable.

To begin with, we need go no further than just considering how the multi-subject strategy affects the students’ academic development positively. It is obvious that, nowadays, most courses are interdependent. Therefore, the broader the knowledge scope a student has, the more competitive he/she would be in the academic field, even in the future work. For instance, if a student major in biology has advanced skills in computer sciences, he/she would be a prospective researcher in the bioinformatics—a newly emerged discipline that has a glorious future. Another case in point is that a management student would gain considerable understanding of his/her subject from the study of psychology. Moreover, it is possible that, provided with more subjects, the students might finally find what interest them the most.

Another advantage of multi-subject education lies in its construction of a group of well-rounded citizens. Virtually, preparation for work is not the only ultimate goal of university education. We may also benefit from the various subjects in the long term in that not only do they broaden our horizon, but also they improve our understanding of the world. For example, with the knowledge of liberal arts, the science students would enjoy more of the literature and fine arts, elevating their aesthetics taste, while the liberal arts students could also appreciate the help of scientific knowledge in the daily life.

Although it is true that specialization has its merits, such as avoidance of the waste of energy and time, and more in-depth study of a subject, its drawbacks outweigh them, especially in the rapidly changing world. As renovations take place in an unprecedented speed in the human history, computers or machines may accomplish what must be achieved by labor only a few months earlier. Without knowledge of other fields, hardly could us adapt to the dizzying changes. What is more, specialization may not compete with multi-subject in the nurture of the ability to learn.

In conclusion, considering the long-term effects both in the academic field and in life, taking classes in several subjects might be a wiser choice for most students than specializing in a certain subject.

Another case in point is that a management student would gain considerable understanding of his/her subject from the study of psychology. Moreover, it is possible that, provided with more subjects, the students might finally find what interest换个benefit或satisfy更好点 them the most.
