This Dutch postimpressionist painter has received an incomparable fame after his death, not only because of his Sunflower, his Starry Night, but his anonymity and unimportance in his time also contribute to his posthumous fame. Thus many people argue that the greatness of individuals can be decided only by their descendants instead of their contemporaries.

I concede that some of the great men and women are too great to be understood and admired by the people living in his/her time, since their intelligence and wit are far beyond other people’s level, a characteristic shared by all the luminaries and at the same time making up a wall separating them with their contemporaries. Even if some equally smart artists or scientists could understand them, it is hard to say that their greatness was being aware of by the mass. Albert Einstein’s relative theory will furnish a cogent example. When most physicians were struggling to develop a new conception of the fundamental character of the matter, known as Quantum Theory, which Einstein had already studied partially, the 20th century’s greatest scientist moved to his general and special theory of relativity, which only his good friend and patron Max Planck understood and appreciated. Theory of relativity can explain many actions and reactions in our universe which can not be explained by mechanical and electrical laws. This greatness was not going to be adored by his contemporaries for sure, most of whom considered his efforts to be misguided, and can only be decided by the later scientists and people in general.

However, we should not blame those people living in the time when the finest men made their feats for ignoring so many of them at that time and leaving us sighing for not being able to see them and every stride they made with our own eyes. It is the lack of education and media should be blamed on instead. We are living in a wonderful society when arts, literature and science are becoming more and more popular among ordinary people, while many individuals in the past were not so fortunate since they could not receive proper, if any, education and could only receive information from limited channels such as mere the mouths of people or the letter and even if the time of radio and television has come, they are not so well-informed as we are today. Take the Italian literature for example, before Dante, not a single writer created their works using the language the Italian common people spoke in their daily life, thus turned the literature works into the privilege of a few nobles and the royalty. Besides the barrier of language, ordinary people were too busy earning their lives to have the access to those great works. Therefore, it is not difficult to see why the great works of those individuals can not be appreciated, even understood by the writers’ contemporaries.

On the other hand, those inventions close to people’s daily life such as the invention of light by Tomas Edison are never too hidden to be found and applauded. It is their closeness to life and common usages that brought them into light. When people feel their life has been lightened and become more convenient in that they could read, write and work at night, they will think of the greatness of the person who provided all this to them. And when their lives are filled with laughs due to the fabulous performance of Chaplin, they never hesitated to give him a laurel.

With the development of both our educational system and the media, we are sure to be acquainted with more and more great man and women, and do not ignore those deserved the flowers and the applause.
