Is the world becoming smaller? To some degree it is.  Since televisions were invented, people can see what happens in other countries without going outside and moreover the Internet has made the world an earth village. In this case the speaker asserts tourism will soon become obsolete because the media like television and worldwide computer connections can provide the knowledge of the large number of places which we have not visited. I concede technological equipment’s great contribution, but the speaker overlooks that tourism has its own unique character and advantages which cannot be replaced by television and Internet.

First, television and computer provide us great convenience in seeing the outside world. Many programs introducing customs and geographical knowledge are broadcasted on TV or can be downloaded on Internet like Discovery, National Geography etc which are widely known.  Listening to the detailed and vivid explanations, we can see those splendid pictures and scenes at the same time. The professional words give you correct and authoritative information accompanied by particular angles of view shot with expertise which will astonish your eyes. There is no doubt that those far-away lands have become much clearer and more familiar thanks to the advanced equipment. One of my classmates who prefers tourism very much always can give us many exciting descriptions of tradition and environment in foreign countries. In fact, he does not have enough time and money to travel but he said the knowledge comes from the media.

However if you can do without the few pleasures of vision, you will find the real tourism is such an attractive and unique activity that nothing can replace it. Tourism gives you an opportunity to go outside your house and to breathe the atmosphere on the other side of the earth. Being personally on the scene, you can talk to the local residents who are so passionate and hospitable. Not like on television, you may taste the delicious food yourself and take part in folk activities. In fact I am enthusiastic in traveling and last year I went to tropical rainforest area in southwestern China. Only when I stood before the palm tree can I feel how small I am compared to it; only when I stepped on the lotus leaf can I know how heavy it can support; only when I taste the abundant tropical fruit can I remember the sweetness of pineapples without dipping in salt water. But if I stay in front of the screen I will not have the golden memory forever.

Apart from your own memory, there are several other advantages like taking exercising. As we all know, traveling especially in natural places of interest, always needs us hiding for a long way or climbing mountains. Those are good chances to test our physical strength and the cooperative spirit when you take tour in group. If you travel in group, all of the travelers should cooperate together and the feeling of achievement that everybody tries one’s best to solve a problem like traversing a fleet river which you will never have before television.  Furthermore, if you travel in cities, shopping is another good choice. In some metropolises such as London, New York, Hong Kong etc, there is so much variety of goods that you never have to make do with second best. Large shopping centers can satisfy travelers' different needs from fashionable dress to souvenirs. So it is with entertainment. Sunny beaches or carnivals allow tourists enjoy their time.

In conclusion, televisions and computers no doubt can bring you a visional tour to many unknown places but tourism will never be obsolete for the reasons I put in the paragraph. I advise you’d better take a plane and have a look at the wonderful world by yourself if you have time and money, and that will be a valuable fortune of your life.
