ISSUE167. "It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician."
(1)effective:Producing a strong impression or response; striking:
(2)useful,这个词是个关键,什么是virtue for a politician,什么是useful virtue,需要一个清楚的定义.
2.Brainstorming:
(1)Free writing:
(2)Looping:

TOPIC: ISSUE167 - "It is impossible for an effective political leader to tell the truth all the time. Complete honesty is not a useful virtue for a politician."
WORDS: 510 TIME: 0:46:22 DATE: 2006-8-2
Honesty is certainly an indispensable virtue for every common person, not to mention those politicians. Actually, the character of a successful political leader goes beyond only being honest. Selected by and serving for the public, effective leaders have to be responsible for both themselves and the society.
People used to recognize politicians as rulers or supervisors, who can monitor them and give out command. But in fact, a politician is not a legislator who makes laws that have to be obeyed without exception, not an elocutionist who makes exciting speeches without effective action, nor is he or she a hero who can save the world in danger, rather, a politician is the very person who has to serve the public and be responsible for social development. It is the politician's obligation and responsibility to tell the truth in any case. When a politician refuse to make other people know what they should know, it is impossible for the very one to be trusted, and a politician without the belief from the public is just like a boat without water around, a tall tree without leaves on. It is hardly for a politician to be effective without credit from the public.
Although telling the truth will sometimes be troublesome and make it more difficult for a politician to deal with, it is significant for keeping a healthy system of politics and government. Admittedly, an honest politician sometimes has to deal with the panic aroused from a terrorist attack, the depression evoked by a bankrupt company, and the distrust created by a political scandal, all of these negative effects have to be considered and dealt with. It seems then unwise for a politician to immerse into those troubles. But if a political leader hides all these truth behind and someday this duplicity is revealed by other people, then the political leader will never be trusted and people will begin to doubt the whole government and therefore result in a more serious problem. In most cases, being honest will make a more even-handed and effective political system and government.
To be a real effective politician, then seems quite difficult. On one hand, honesty is an essential requirement; on the other, the ability to deal with those negative effects becomes a priority. Fast reaction, decisive resolution and holistic consideration are all needed. For example, when a scandal in politics comes out, an effective politician announces it to the public rather than hides it, he announces every details of it rather than gives a piece of blurry information and he deals with it immediately and effectively rather than wait until the public becomes to complain about and criticize the government. Only in these ways can he better remove those negative effects of telling the truth. In short, an effective leader faces the truth rather than evade it.
In sum, it is essential to be honest and brave enough if one wants to be an effective politician. Also, an effective politician not only tells the truth, but also deals with it in time and in effect. |
