170."The surest indicator of a great nation is not the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but the general welfare of all its people."
According to this statement, the sorts of achievements that the speaker cites have nothing to do with a nation’s general welfare, as well as it fails to define what the so-called “general welfare” is. Thereby from my point of view, this statement is too extreme.
First, when we speak of “promoting the general welfare”, we refer to the following aspect: public health and safety, military security against invasion, autonomy and freedom, culture variety and a high standard of living. But here comes the question, who will make all these achievements above into reality? By the people themselves? Impossible. It is our scientists, artists, and those statesmen who bring the aim of people's welfare into fruition.
It can be obviously seen that our scientific achievements serve to enhance a nation’s general welfare. Without these efforts, we might still live in the middle ages. For example, advances in health science have enhanced our physical well-being, the cure of those diseases which can not be treated previously, such as syphilis, influenza and phthisis, not only provide people a much longer life span, but also makes our life more comfortable. Beside the benefits which health science brought us, advances in technology have enabled us to travel to more places in a short period, communicate with people on the other side of the world by simply make a telephone call, and learn more about the world much more effectively.
Moreover, artistic achievements also have great contributions to make a nation a better place. Architecture, for example, is the heritage of all human beings, mean time it is the symbol of civilization. A nation with great buildings can either show the world it’s abundance of resources, or to let its people feel proud of their own civilization. Music, as another example, provides people an opportunity to purify their mind and soul, ever since the begging of the human history, we started to use music to express ourselves, to bring joy to the others, to make our lives a chromatic land of living rather than a dull and silent world.
Finally, the military and diplomatic achievements of a nation’s leaders provide their citizens an integral contribution to the general welfare. Although we complain about our politicians for their lack credibility from time to time, we still need a group of elite who can give their people a peace land for home, a secured society to live, and to lead us to build a better tomorrow.
In summary, most of the general welfares we people had are not self-generated, they are provided by the accomplishments of our scientists, artists, and our so called rulers. On the other hand, these elite people are also from our society, their can not achieve without their people’s support and trust. Thus the surest indicator of a great nation is not simply the achievements of its pioneers, or the general welfare of its all people, but should be, by the commonalty’s support, the general welfare provided by the achievement of its rulers, artists, and scientists. |
