Argument145
145A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.
outline: 1 vague data,多少打呼的有呼吸暂停症
2 没有证据说明懒于锻炼
3 conclusion 他们吃得多而且练得少,没有排除他因
4可能因果倒置了
Based on a new study showing that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than those do not, the arguer recommends anyone who snores to eat less than the average people and exercise more. However, after an overall analysis, we would find that both the study and the deduction part are problematic.
First of all, the new study which the whole argument relied on provides us with no detailed information or precise data to show the link between snoring and gaining weight. We are not informed by the study results such as what fraction of snoring people actually suffer from sleep apnea, the sample size and whether these samples could represent people in general since the arguer draws an universal conclusion. In absence of these important information, it is impossible to assess the reliability of this study.
Secondly, even if those snoring people do suffer from apnea, the assertion that they will be too tired during the day to do exercise still lacks of trustful evidence. Since the arguer mentioned in the article that the waking goes unnoticed, it is entirely possible that this kind of brief wake will not do any harm to the sleeping people, and thus could not be felt either after they wake up. Besides, we are not informed that those snoring people really do not exercise themselves. It is entirely possible that they hold a habit to exercise everyday or even they particularly do the exercise work when they feel tired in order to refresh themselves. Before giving out enough evidence to rule out other possibilities, I can not be convinced that those people lack of exercise.
Moreover, in the conclusion, the arguer commits false dilemma to unfairly attributes snoring people’s putting on weight to their eating too much or exercising too little, which is totally untenable. There is no direct comparison between the quantity of food eaten by snoring people and the average people, so does the exercise. Admittedly, this maybe the case, however, there still stands a good chance that these people suffer from endocrine disorder or other diseases which really accounts for their gaining weight.
Finally, the correlation between snoring people and putting on weight demonstrated by the new study may rightfully be mistaken by the speaker in that the cause may not necessarily to be snoring, instead, it could be the overweight that causes the snoring. With these two equally right conclusion deduced from the study, the arguer’s advise to snoring people may be misleading.
To sum up, lacking of precise data in the study and a complete thought about the real cause of gaining weight as well as the relation between snoring and increasing in weight, this argument may give a false direction to people. To make it more convincingly, detailed information and a comprehensive analysis are required
