TOPIC: ISSUE 51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
WORDS: 644          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-8-7

Whether education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet individual's difference, like their needs and interests? Despite assorted effusions to the contrary, I am deeply convinced that education will be more beneficial if it could be designed differently as the receiver of education verified from person to person. Why should this be so? Three main kinds of answer are offered as followed.

Education will be more effective when it is specifically designed to each individual, born out of the conviction that each student are born different and unique, therefore, the education they receive should be adjusted as their differences. Suppose that there is a student who lives in Huston. From his/ her childhood, he/she is fascinated by the mystery of astronomy. He/she learns a bulk of knowledge about this field. And meanwhile, a student in Florida might be interested in sea. Only different settings of their courses can satisfy their different needs in study. If all the students around the US take exactly the same course, the resultant future generation of US could be expected to be similar in every bearing. They think alike, they act alike. However, this would be a failure in our education. Understandably, education, when it is designed on the accounts of difference among students, can be well functioned.

Not only students are different according to their nature, but also their living environments are totally verified from each other. Living in a comparatively poor community, the biggest hope of one student may be to learn some practical knowledge that will help him/her instantly better-off. While, another student, who born with a silver spoon in his mouth, might have the craving to study arts, in which field he/she can express his/her idea about life. If, however, both of them are required to a certain course, let say, piano, it is entirely possible that the poor student might feel the course is useless, and then drop the class. Therefore, if students have to adjust themselves to only one rigid course setting, it can be said that the education is unfair to each of them for their right to learn what they want is not protected.

However, even for a completely personal education design, it does leave some questions open. No matter how diversified the student group is, there is one background they share in common, that is , they are all the citizen in one country. This requires them to take some same basic courses, like English, math, and so forth. These basic courses allow them to have the accessibility to change ideas and communicate with each other. To illustrate this point evidently, let us take a look at a specific example that is very persuasive. In the case mentioned above, the basic sharing course enable them change their ideas with other members in their group, regardless of their different backgrounds. This kind of education, in one way, keeps the door of learning from each other open, in another way; it is a useful mechanism to avoid discrimination among different groups. Without such fundamental education, our society, though verified as ever, might become much polarized. And because of scant communication, there will be more conflicts within the whole society that are very, very harmful to our country. Accordingly, the education design cannot be absolutely thrown to individual; there must be some basic courses that apply to all the students.

In conclusion, without personal education design that meets different needs and environments, our education system will become more rigid, and this system will probably strangle many prodigies in their infancy; without a certain education design that are shared among all the students, there will be a gap in future society, and this is not the result we want; thus, a education design that not only provide same course but also consider individual situation will be a good choice.
