TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.
WORDS: 410          TIME: 0:30:00          DATE: 2006-8-10

In this argument, the arguer recommend that dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patient. To support his argument, the arguer cites the statistics collected from dentist. As it stands, the argument suffers from several critical flaws as follows.

To begin with, the statistics is too vague to provide sufficient information. Since we are not informed how many dentists have been involved and where these dentists' offices are located, we have a good reason to doubt that if the results are representative of the general situation. Suppose there are only 2-3 dentist are surveyed and they are from the same city, the statistics will makes no sense.

Moreover, even if the statistics is convincing, the fact that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist does not follow that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done. Perhaps men are more caring about their dental health and therefore go to the dentist more frequently which of course result in larger amount of faint. In addition, the faint can be caused by other factors. For example, some men are probably allergic to some chemical substance in the office of the dentist. Or maybe most men like to go to the dentist after they finish a day's work. In such situation their faint may be due to their tiredness instead of their distresses. Any of the scenarios, if true, will leave the arguer’s suggestion ungrounded.

Finally, even if the arguer can substantiate all the foregoing assumptions, the strategy proposed by the arguer to attract more customers is problematic. First, it is possible that women also make up a large portion of the customers. The arguer fail to consider their needs and simply recommend dentist to target male consumer which may result in numerous customer loss. Also, the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff can not ensure that male customer would satisfy with the service there. More important aspects such as the effectiveness of their dental work, the environment of the dentists’ office, the recovering condition after they leave there and the price will be concerned. Without providing information about these, the arguer’s recommendation is questionable.

To sum up, the proposal made by the arguer lack credibility since the reasons in the argument do not lend strong support to what the arguer claims. To substantiate this argument, the arguer has to provide us with more specific evidence to prove that men is the main customer of the dentist and they are indeed more likely to be distressed during the dental work is done.
