issue83 - "Government should preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state, even though these areas are often extremely remote and thus accessible to only a few people."
WORDS: 521 TIME: 0:44:48 DATE: 2006-8-6
Should the government to make great effort to preserve publicly owned wilderness areas in their natural state? In my opinion, I agree with the speaker's view that we should preserve the remote areas for most of the cases.
A threshold reason why I hold the opinion is that it is an essential and necessary method to protect our environment. Protecting environment is a project which should be lasted from generation to generation. The remote areas are usually the most aboriginal areas which have valuable vegetation resource or other special physiognomy which is important for the local, the nation, even the world as a whole. Unconventionally developing them may makes the local people go into raptures at the mere mention of the profit these days, however, the serious impact on the future is unpredictable. For example, the tropical rain forest in Brazil is precious for us; however, many of them have been burnt to turn the land into farmland. If the government does not understand the ponderance of preserve the rain forest from now on, our offspring can only find the great forest in the history several years later.
In addition, even if those areas are too remote to be accessed by many people, it is also important to protect the wild animals from being disturbed of human being. We can easily infer that the few people who access into the remote areas must have the special purpose. It is the few poachers who damaged the living of some precious animals. The goa on the Tibet plateau is a representative example. Because of the intemperate poaching of the goas, the number of them have declined dramatically in the recently years and the host of the plateau is facing the danger of extinguishment for the unfriendly guests. Only if the government takes urgent measures to preserve the living lands of the precious animals, can we live peacefully with the thousands of animals in the world.
Admittedly, in some areas where the environment has been serious, we need to take other measures to realize the value of the land. For example, in the northwest of China, there is nothing but deserts. We can not leave it as deserts but to develop it and change it to the areas which are suitable for people to live in. We can exploit the abundant resource of oils under the deserts, we can also use the water of ice mountains to turn the deserts into oases. The most important method is to plant plenty of trees to better the environment. By the effort of human being, the remote and poor areas can show their value in another way. To some extent, this non-preservation will benefit the today's people and tomorrow's people as well.
In summary, from what have been discussed above, we can safely conclude that for the area which is worthy to be preserved, the government should devote a lot of energy and money to protect them, even if they are remote and accessible to only a few people. If the condition is too bad, we should adopt other methods to develop the advantages of the land. |
